COMPANY EARNINGS RELEASES
> The Provimi Group announced consolidated results for the first six months of the year. Revenue was EUR 893 million ($1.09 billion), an increase of 6% compared to the comparable period in 2009. (company press release)
> Del Monte Foods reported net sales for the first quarter fiscal 2011 ended August 1, 2010. For the first quarter, Pet Products net sales were $427 million, an increase of 3.6% over sales in the prior year period. (Business Wire)

> The FDA announced the approval of a New Animal Drug Application for Pfizer’s PropoClear (propofol) for intravenous use in cats and dogs for the induction and maintenance of anesthesia and for induction followed by maintenance with an inhalant anesthetic. PropoClear is the first lipid-free injectable propofol and offers a 28-day broached vial shelf life. The product was launched by Fort Dodge in the EU in 2009. (FDA)
> Van Beek Global announced the launch of UterFlush, a liquid product for reproductive care in beef and dairy cattle. UterFlush contains essential oils with antimicrobial properties to help restore the post-calving cow’s uterus to normal as quickly as possible. (Feedstuffs)
> After a four-month voluntary suspension of its veterinary compounding practice, Franck’s Pharmacy resumed the compounding lab part of its operation, in light of a federal judge’s recent refusal to grant a preliminary injunction requested by the FDA that would have halted the company’s animal compounding practice. The judge also declined to dismiss the complaint altogether. (Ocala.com)
> North American Compendiums announced that the ninth edition of the North American Companion Animal Formulary (NACAF) is now available and ready for shipping. The compendium is available in printed form, CD ROM, USB, and web editions. (company press release)
> EU Synbiotics Europe announced the release of Serelisa M. ParaTB Ab Mono Indirect kit. The ELISA detects Mycobacterium Avium Sub. paratuberculosis antibodies for the diagnosis of Paratuberculosis (Johne’s disease) in ruminants. (company press release)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
> US – FISH VACCINE Scientists at the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service have shown that fish can be immunized against Ich, the ’white-spot’ disease, although growing the parasite in large quantities for immunization use is problematic. The researchers used high-frequency sound waves to kill the parasite in its feeding stage, then showed that bathing the catfish with the dead parasite induced immunity. 60% of the fish vaccinated this way survived exposure to the parasite, compared with only about 10% of unvaccinated fish. (LA Times)
> US – GM SALMON The FDA will host a three-day meeting in mid-September to discuss whether a faster-growing, genetically engineered salmon is safe to eat. If approved, the salmon, made by Aqua Bounty Technologies Inc, would be the first genetically altered animal food to consumers’ dinner plates. The meeting marks just the second time the FDA has publicly considered a genetically engineered animal. Last year, the agency approved GTC Biotherapeutics Inc’s modified goats used to produce its anticlotting drug Atryn for patients with a rare inherited disorder. (Reuters)
> US – NEW TRADE GROUP A new organization has been formed to represent animal supplement manufacturers, marketers, ingredient suppliers and others in the segment. The National Association of Animal Supplement Manufacturers & Marketers (NAASM) is a non-profit organization based in Las Cruces, New Mexico, that aims to ensure the quality of animal supplement ingredients and products. August 25-31, 2010
The CVC in Kansas City registered more than 6,000 attendees this year, with 2,087 veterinarians, 777 technicians, 225 practice managers, 111 veterinary students, 1,106 guests, and 1,725 exhibitors. The conference connected veterinarians with experts in a variety of disciplines and 350 exhibiting animal-health companies.

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
The activities of many companies were reduced this week as the industry prepares for the long Labor Day Weekend. Hopefully everyone will eat their share of animal protein and purchase a few extra products for their pets.
It appears to us that some of the momentum in the general economy is softening, which could cause reduced revenue from products and services the last four months of the year in animal health. As has been confirmed in a number of studies, the past 18 months the animal health industry is not recession proof, so let’s keep up the marketing and sales support during this challenging period.
On Monday of this week we had the great pleasure of participating in the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor Homecoming Event with 750 other industry participants. On Tuesday, more than 150 investors and business development managers attended the second Animal Health Investment Forum that was organized by the KCAHC and sponsored by various organizations including Brakke Consulting, Inc. who believe that increased venture capital is needed in the industry to support innovation. We want to thank all who attended, particularly the 19 presenting companies. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2011 in Kansas City.
