2025 Cancer in Dogs and Cats report – coming in March
Pre-order by February 28

Did you know that cancer is the #1 cause of death in adult dogs?  It’s also a leading health concern of dog owners.  So how is cancer addressed by the veterinary profession, and what kind of market is there for veterinary cancer therapies?

Brakke Consulting’s new 2025 Cancer in Dogs and Cats report includes information on the incidence, diagnosis, and treatment of the common veterinary cancers.  It covers currently approved veterinary therapies and those in development, as well as estimates of the numbers of pets treated.

The study includes a survey of 300 general veterinary practitioners about incidence of cancer and frequency of treatment; as well as a survey of 1,000 pet owners to determine what they are willing to pay to treat a pet with cancer.

The report is available for pre-order for $7,995 until February 28, and $8,500 thereafter. The report will be published in March. For more information, please contact Dr. Lynn Fondon at info@brakkeconsulting.com .

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
It was great to see many of our News & Notes subscribers at the VMX conference in Orlando this week and we are very grateful to those that attended the 2025 Animal Health Industry Overview on Monday afternoon.  This was the best attended session we have ever had, so thanks to all of you for your support.

As I walked the exhibition hall and talked to the exhibitors, everyone seemed to be positive about 2025, especially those with new products to launch.  Elanco’s combination parasiticide, Credlio Quattro was launched and the company was taking orders, along with recently approved Zenrelia for atopic dermatitis.  There was some buzz around Merck’s injectable Bravecto parasiticide and possible dermatology product later in the year.

Another notable launch was IDEXX’s new lymphoma early detection test – IDEXX Cancer Dx – notable for its affordability and ability to expand on to other cancers.  There was some talk about Zoetis’s Librela for canine OA pain, but my sense is that veterinarians are simply learning how to use it – my 10-year-old athletic Labrador retriever is doing fantastic after his third injection.

We will hold our Industry Overview at WVC in Las Vegas on March 3rd, so if you missed the one in Orlando, you still have a chance to attend.  Hope to see you there.

YOUR VIEW
Last week, we asked if you believed that animal health companies are investing adequately in R&D for livestock, and almost 80% said that they were not.  (As we pointed out in the Overview this week, the growth in the livestock business for many animal health companies rivaled the growth in the companion animal business in 2024.)

This week
This week, let’s get your view on adopting innovation in the veterinary drug space.  At the Overview, we talked about how new, innovative products drove growth in the veterinary industry in 2025 and at VMX, we heard about how veterinarians will learn over time how to prescribe and use new veterinary products.

In your opinion, in general, how much time does it take for the majority of veterinarians to become comfortable prescribing and using novel classes of veterinary drugs?
