Animal Health Jobs
Read the 2024 Candidate Attitudinal Survey Results

We are excited to share the findings of the Fourth Annual Animal Health Jobs Candidate Attitudinal Survey. Building upon insights gathered in 2021 and 2022, this comprehensive survey sheds light on the evolving attitudes of job seekers in the animal health industry.

The survey responses were carefully evaluated across various demographics, including gender, job level, and years of experience, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the industry’s current state and trends. Once again, this year’s Animal Health Jobs Candidate Attitudinal Survey explored animal health industry insiders’ attitudes and perceptions about their jobs, their companies, and the industry.

In 2022 and 2023, the survey spotlighted emerging challenges in employee satisfaction and organizational stability. In 2024 we see signs that the animal health culture itself is at risk, including a doubling of the negative comments used to describe careers. New entrants and experienced individual contributors are struggling with workload and feel unappreciated. We call on industry leaders to take action and get the culture of the animal health industry back on track.

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS

  • US – ONE HEALTH The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the USDA, and the Department of the Interior (DOI) released the first-ever National One Health Framework to Address Zoonotic Diseases and Advance Public Health Preparedness in the United States. The One Health approach importantly provides a framework to navigate health threats shared between people and animals. (USDA)
  • US – CANNABIS REGULATION The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine has released a request for information (RFI) soliciting comments from the public, particularly veterinarians, related to the use of cannabis-derived products (CDP) in animals. The focus of this RFI is on cannabidiol (CBD) products and other products derived from hemp. The comment period for this RFI opens on January 16, and will be open for 90 days, ending on April 16, 2025. (FDA)
  • GERMANY – FMD Germany has confirmed an infection of foot-and-mouth disease in a herd of water buffalo in Märkisch-Oderland, Brandenburg, the first FMD outbreak in nearly 40 years. Europe hasn’t had a positive case since Bulgaria in 2011. The virus has been identified as serotype O; closely related FMD viruses can be found the Middle East and Asia, however the exact origin and route of entry into livestock in Germany is still unknown. Local authorities have taken control and protection measures. (Feedstuffs)
  • US – AVIAN INFLUENZA The USDA announced that it will rebuild a stockpile of avian influenza vaccines for poultry that match the strain of the virus circulating in commercial flocks and wild birds. The U.S. built a poultry vaccine stockpile after the prior major bird flu outbreak in 2014 and 2015, though the vaccines were never used. The outbreak, which began in poultry in early 2022, has killed more than 130 million commercial, backyard and wild birds in all 50 states. (reuters)
  • UK – HORSE GENETICS Researchers at Royal Veterinary College have identified of a global gene expression signature associated with the genetic risk of catastrophic fracture in iPSC-derived osteoblasts in Thoroughbred horses.  A deeper understanding of these genes and their DNA variants which underpin their differential expression may reveal more about the molecular mechanisms that are involved in equine bone health and fracture risk. The research was published in Wiley Online Library. (wiley.com)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
That there are a number of concerning trends in animal diseases right now. There’s the ongoing problem with highly pathogenic avian influenza in both birds and dairy cows; Mexico’s announcement of new world screwworm; the detection of African Swine Fever on Caribbean islands, and this week the first case of foot-and-mouth disease in Germany in 40 years, to name a few.

Our government in the US seems to be taking the threat of foreign diseases seriously. USDA is establishing a Swine Health Improvement Program that will monitor for ASF and CSF. They have earmarked $165 million in emergency funding for protecting US livestock from screwworm, and are rebuilding the government’s avian influenza vaccine stockpile.

We have already seen instances of species-hopping in these viruses – for example, avian influenza has sickened both cows and cats, as well as a few people. For that reason, it’s imperative that the One Health approach becomes the standard in both human and animal healthcare moving forward. The US Government’s newly released National One Health Framework is a step in the right direction. Now it’s time to implement their recommendations and to work collaboratively to address threats and public health preparedness.
