COMPANY EARNINGS RELEASES
• SeQuent Scientific Limited announced its financial results for the full year ended March 31, 2017. Revenue was Rs. 9,151 million ($141 million), an increase of 47% compared to the prior year. EBITDA for the year was Rs. 881 million ($14 million) compared to Rs. 552 million in fiscal year 2016. Subsidiary Alivira Animal Health represents about 70% of Sequent’s revenues. • Sanderson Farms Inc. reported results for its fiscal 2017 second quarter and six months ended April 30, 2017. Net sales for the second quarter of fiscal 2017 were $802 million, an increase of 16% compared to the same period a year ago. Net income was $66.9 million compared with net income of $47.6 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2016. (Feedstuffs)

• Bayer filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against CAP IM Supply alleging that CAP IM Supply’s products containing imidacloprid, permethrin and pyriproxyfen with other ingredients infringe Bayer’s patent protecting its Bayer’s K9 Advantix II product for the prevention and treatment of ticks, fleas, and mosquitoes for dogs. • Biocorp announced the signature of an industrialization contract with Virbac following a 24-month collaboration to develop a delivery device adapted to the needs of the veterinary laboratory. (Business wire)
• Dechra Veterinary Products announced the launch of MiconaHex+Triz and TrizCHLOR 4 in an easy-to-use mousse formulation. (company press release)
• Nutramax Labs announced the launch of new Cosequin Calm nutritional supplement to help support balanced behavior and relaxation. Cosequin Calm provides a proprietary combination of ingredients in a chewable tablet to provide a comprehensive approach to behavioral issues.(company announcement)
• Jinyu Bio-technology Co., LTD, announced it will open a new vaccine research lab and office in the Kansas City region. Jinyu will work with Kansas State University, the City of Manhattan and the State of Kansas to develop new animal health products that can be marketed in Asia, Africa and the US. • Tropichem Research Labs announced that the company has been named a Preferred Supplier by the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC). (company press release)
• Pets Naturally announced it has acquired The D.O.G. Bakery and changed the company’s name to D.O.G. Bakery by Pets Naturally. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Pet Product News)
• Canadian company Kenilworth Media, Inc. announced it has acquired Veterinary Practice News (VPN) from Lumina Media LLC. The purchase deal also includes the website, veterinarypracticenews.com. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. (Mastheadonline.com)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
• US – CANINE INFLUENZA Health officials have confirmed a dozen cases of H3N2 canine influenza in Florida, where they say the flu was spreading among animals at two dog shows. There have been no deaths reported, and all dogs under treatment are in stable condition. (WHSV.com)
• CHINA – AVIAN INFLUENZA More than 20,000 chickens died from an outbreak of H7N9 avian influenza in northwest China’s Shaanxi province. The outbreak occurred at an egg farm run by Lvxiangyuan Ecology Co. A three-kilometer-radius area has been closed for disinfection, and all poultry in the area will be culled. Poultry trading sites have been shut down. (AVMA SmartBrief – Reuters)
• EUROPE – BSE RISK STATUS Poland, Scotland and Northern Ireland have been granted ’negligible risk’ BSE status by the OIE. Under OIE rules, a country can gain the optimum ’negligible risk’ status when it has reported no classical BSE cases in animals born more recently than 11 years ago. (Animal Pharm)
• US – VETERINARY EDUCATION Texas State Congressmen announced the inclusion of $4.1 million in the recently passed state budget to establish a veterinary school at Texas Tech University. The school still faces continued opposition from Texas A&M, as well as earning approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; both the board and Texas A&M have said the cost of adding another veterinary school could be better spent on helping expand Texas A&M’s reach throughout the state. • US – MILK PRODUCTION USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service released the monthly Milk Production Report for April 2017 on May 19, 2017. The US dairy herd continued to outpace last year’s production figures on all accounts, increasing milk per cow by 24 pounds and total production by 336 million pounds. It is also the sixth consecutive month of rising milk cow numbers, bringing the total dairy herd to 9.39 million head, a level not seen since 1995. (Vet Advantage – Dairy Herd Management)
• US – BRUCELLOSIS RESEARCH The National Research Council (NRC) has published the report “Revisiting Brucellosis in the Greater Yellowstone Area.” In the report, NRC said recent evidence indicates that elk, not bison, are the main transmitters of the disease, and thus, control efforts should focus on limiting transmission from elk to livestock. BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
We hope all of our readers in the US enjoyed the Memorial Day weekend. During the past two weeks I’ve had the opportunity to travel up and down the middle of the US. We found most producers are optimistic regarding what 2017 will bring financially, based on the assumption that they’ll have reasonably low prices for feed grains. Currently, the pastures look great and most of the crops are in the ground. You will note that dairy is producing record amounts of milk which will put pressure on prices for the year. The relatively warm winter and spring along with plenty of moisture has moved the flea and tick season up a few weeks. This is likely to produce a record year for the companion animal parasite market in all retail channels. This should be a good year for the industry!
