> Heska Corporation reported financial results for its third quarter ended September 30, 2011. Third quarter revenue was $17.6 million, unchanged from the $17.6 million for the third quarter last year. Net income was $288,000 compared to net income of $241,000 in the third quarter of 2010. (MarketWatch) 
> ImmuCell Corporation announced the results for the third quarter of 2011. Product sales increased by 15% to $1,003,000 in comparison to the same period in 2010. The net loss was ($128,000) during the three-month period in comparison to a net loss of ($197,000) during the same period in 2010. (company press release)
> PetSmart, Inc. reported results for the third quarter of 2011. Total sales for the quarter increased 8% to $1.5 billion; comparable store sales grew 6%. Net income totaled $56 million in the third quarter of 2011, compared to $46 million in the third quarter of 2010. (company website)
> Spectrum Brands Holdings, Inc. announced financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 ended September 30. The Global Pet Supplies Business segment reported net sales of $154 million for the quarter, an increase of 6% compared with the comparable year-ago period. (BusinessWire) 
> Pfizer announced it will introduce a new version of its semi-automated in ovo vaccination system to make the advantages of egg vaccination available to smaller hatcheries and poultry companies. The Embrex Inovoject m is designed for those hatcheries that do not have a large enough footprint or egg throughput to justify the installation of a full-size Embrex Inovoject. (Animal Pharm)
> Elanco parent company Eli Lilly and Co. is suing Yanchep Veterinary Clinic, an Australian veterinary clinic, for allegedly reselling Comfortis to US consumers online without Lilly’s permission, violating FDA regulations. (Indiana Business Journal)
> Virbac announced it has entered into a strategic alliance with Taiwan-based Schweitzer Biotech Company (SBC) to manufacture food animal vaccines for the Chinese market.  The joint venture will be called SBC-Virbac and be based in Hong Kong. Virbac holds 49% of the shareholding, with the possibility of ultimately acquiring the whole capital stock. (Animal Pharm)
> AgriLabs announced that the USDA has approved Titanium 5 L5 and Master Guard 10 vaccines as an aid in preventing disease caused by Leptospira borgpetersenii hardjo-bovis in beef and dairy cattle. (company press release) 
> SmartVet, the Australian animal health business that has developed an innovative ectoparasiticide delivery system for cattle at pasture, announced it will open a US headquarters office in the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor. (Animal Pharm) 
> Vets Plus, Inc. announced the launch of Probios Soft Chews for dogs. The Soft Chews contain both probiotics and prebiotics to help maintain healthy digestive systems in dogs. (Vet Advantage)
> Global Animal Management, a wholly owned subsidiary of Merck and Co., introduced the eyeD Equine Identification System, a non-invasive, highly accurate and secure equine identification solution based on iris-scan technology. (company press release) 
> Trouw Nutrition launched Rumenac, a four-step ruminant feed evaluation system for more efficient and accurate ration formulation for dairy cows. (Feedstuffs)
> Milk Products announced the addition of Ultra Start 150 Plus to its Sav-a-Caf product line.  The new product contains ImmuCell’s First Defense Technology and 150 grams of globulin proteins in a small feeding size. (Feedstuffs)
> Signature DNA Unleashed announced the launch of its pet DNA art product. Signature DNA extracts and amplifies an animal’s DNA from a mouth swab sample, and then the company’s artists combine the DNA image with the customer’s favorite pet photo. (Pet Business)
> EU  Nutreco announced that it and ForFarmers have signed an agreement on the intended sale of its Hendrix feed division to ForFarmers for a total consideration of EUR 92.5 million ($125 million). Hendrix is a leading supplier of compound feed in the Netherlands and Belgium with a strong regional market position in Germany.  As part of the transaction, Nutreco and ForFarmers have entered into a long-term strategic partnership. > US – ANTIBIOTIC USE   The FDA has published revised sales figures for farm antibiotics that show a much more modest rise for 2010 than an earlier estimate. Last month the agency published a report that showed a 6.7% increase in sales of antibiotics for food-producing animals compared with 2009. The new figures show a 1.3% rise in sales for 2010, which is in line with meat production. (Animal Pharm)
> EU – ANIMAL DISEASE  The EU has earmarked more than EUR 203 million ($275 million) to support programs to eradicate, control and monitor animal diseases and zoonoses. The decision was taken at the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCoFCAH), where Member States also unanimously endorsed the European Commission proposals to contribute EUR 11.5 million for the emergency measures and vaccination plans taken to combat some animal diseases over the past four years. (
> US – PET LAWSUIT   A Texas appeals court ruled that the owners of a mistakenly euthanized dog can sue to recover the sentimental value of their lost pet, reversing and remanding the ruling of a trial court and reinstating the plaintiffs’ negligence lawsuit against a City of Fort Worth animal shelter employee. According to the plaintiffs’ attorney, this is the first time in Texas that someone can sue for a pet’s sentimental value. (Courthouse news service)
> US – SWINE BUSINESS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine announced the formation of an Executive Pork Producers Program (EP3), the first program to target owners and managers in the pork industry for skill development to improve profits and cultivate the industry’s leadership community.  The two-year program is modeled after the award-winning Executive Veterinary Program (EVP) in swine health management, a program for veterinarians started at the university in 1991. > US – ANESTHETIC GUIDELINES   The American Animal Hospital Association released its new guidelines for anesthetizing dogs and cats. The guidelines appear on the AAHA website and in the Nov.-Dec. issue of the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association. (Vet Advantage)
As we prepare for Thanksgiving week here in the US, we need to be mindful that not every consumer appreciates the value of animal proteins in our diets. There are groups of individuals that believe that the large-scale production of animal protein is evil and should be outlawed. These various groups continue to provide often misleading information regarding production agriculture.
Thankfully the majority of consumers enjoy the quality, taste and health benefits of animal protein. Those of us participating in animal protein production, either as a producer or supplier of products or services to producers, need to make sure that we continue to educate the general public on the benefits of animal protein and the realities and benefits of modern production. Also, we must be a part of the continuing process of improving animal agriculture so that animals and poultry are treated respectfully in all phases of the production process.
