COMPANY EARNINGS RELEASES
> Sanderson Farms posted net income of $47.8 million compared with $19.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2009, an increase of 140%. For fiscal 2010, Sanderson Farms reported record net income of $135 million and sales of $1.9 billion, versus profits of $82 million and sales of $1.8 billion in 2009. (Meating Place)

> Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. introduced five new Vetera equine vaccines, including Vetera Gold + VEE, the only equine vaccine with 8-way disease protection in one vaccine. (Vet Advantage)
> Freedom Health, LLC announced that the US Patent and Trademark Office has issued a patent for Succeed Digestive Conditioning Program for the Succeed formulation for “dietary supplement and method for the treatment of digestive tract ulcers in equines.” With this, Succeed becomes the only product with a US Patent for the treatment of both gastric and colonic ulcers in horses. > Desert Veterinary Concepts, LLC announced the launch of Desert’s Sand cat litter, an all-natural volcanic ash based product (Zeolite) that absorbs urine and renders both urine and feces completely odorless. DVC currently has patent pending status for its technology. (company press release)
> UK Optivite announced the UK launch of two new nutrition products: Optimax and Red-Lite. Optimax has high levels of carboxylic acids and salts and aids animal performance by improving digestive capability. Red-Lite is composed of naturally occurring diatoms, active against most common external parasites such as red chicken mite and northern fowl mite. (Animal Pharm)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
> US – PIROPLASMOSIS The Kentucky Department of Agriculture has told race tracks that beginning Jan. 1, all horses must test negative for equine piroplasmosis to be allowed on a Kentucky racetrack. Since October 2009, at least 550 horses nationwide have tested positive, including one horse in Kentucky. At least eight states already require proof of a negative test. (AVMA SmartBrief)
> EU – FEED REGULATION The European Commission and the Member States have adopted the final guidelines for distinctions among feed materials, feed additives, biocidal products and veterinary medicinal products. The guidelines, according to the European Union Association of Specialty Feed Ingredients and Their Mixtures (FEFANA), will clarify the decision-making process when determining the proper regulatory classification status of any feed product. > US – SHELTER MEDICINE The Association of Shelter Veterinarians announced the release of new “Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.” The Guidelines are intended as a positive tool for shelters and communities to review animal care, identify areas that need improvement, allocate resources and implement solutions so welfare is optimized, euthanasia is minimized, and suffering is prevented. BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
This is one of the last newsletters for 2010 since by this time next week we’ll be involved in the Christmas Holiday, which will be followed quickly by New Year’s Eve. Because of our dedicated readers and clients BCI has had another successful year. Thanks for all of your support in 2010.
Over the next few days, BCI will be spending time working on our 2011 Animal Health Industry Overview. In developing the outline for next year’s presentation, we have decided to step outside of the box a bit and spend a little more time on some of the economic and political issues that not only impact the general economy but also impact the animal health economy.
In preparation for providing some thoughts on these issues, I have just completed reading two books that I could highly recommend to each of you for Holiday reading. The first is “Seeds of Destruction” by Glenn Hubbard and Peter Navarro; the second is “The Great Reset” by Richard Florida. Both are reasonably easy reads but give some excellent insights with supporting data regarding what is occurring (or not occurring) in our economy and in Washington DC.
The Overview will also include new analysis of several trends occurring in the industry and our thoughts as to the short and long term impact of these trends on the industry.
