• Jurox announced the launch of Alfaxan Multidose with the same benefits as the original Alfaxan in a preserved formula. The new, non-irritating, preservative allows ongoing use for up to 28 days after the vial has been broached. (company announcement)
• Zinpro announced the launch of ProPath, a new multi-species performance mineral range, in the US and Mexico. (Animal Pharm)
• ECO Animal Health Ltd announced that it has entered into a licensing deal with the Poultry Diagnostic & Research Center, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia (UGA). The deal, at a cost of just over $1 million in phased payments of eight quarterly instalments over a two year period, allows ECO to license research-related innovations leading to the development of potential vaccines in the field of Mycoplasma gallisepticum, a bacterium that can cause severe respiratory disease in poultry. • Petco and Express Scripts announced a new strategic alliance offering pet parents access to pet prescriptions and OTC medications online via petco.com and petcoach.co for delivery directly to their front door, all Powered by Express Scripts. (PRNewswire)
• Petmate announced it has acquired Gen7Pets, a manufacturer of pet products including strollers, travel carriers and ramps. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Pet Business)
• Neovia announced a partnership with French probiotics start-up TargEDys to explore weight control in dogs. TargEDys has previously developed ProbioSatys technology to naturally moderate appetite in humans. The two firms intend to extend this research into cats in the future. (Animal Pharm)
• Nutreco has entered into a global partnership with fodjan, a web-based feed management platform, which includes rationing, feed management and networking of data, technology and farm advisers. (Animal Pharm)
• Brief Media, publisher of Clinician’s Brief, announced the acquisition of Pharmavet, Inc, creator of the leading veterinary drug reference, the Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook, and Brief Media’s partner in the software as a service (SaaS) equivalent, Plumb’s Veterinary Drugs. Financial terms were not disclosed. (company press release)
• Performance Livestock Analytics (PLA) announced it has raised $2.25 million through a series B funding round. PLA provides cloud-based livestock farm management software and analytics tools, which it launched around 20 months ago. (Animal Pharm)
• INDIA Alltech announced the opening of a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Pune, India. With a production capacity of 25,000 tons per year, it is the largest organic trace mineral plant in Asia. The Pune facility was designed to cater not only to the local market but to South Asia and Southeast Asia, Australia and Europe as well. (Feed Strategy eNews)
• ASIA Permira announced it will acquire 50% of the shares of Ye Cherng Industrial Products (Grobest), one of the largest independent producers of aqua feed in Asia. A shareholder group will retain a 50% stake in the firm. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. (Animal Pharm)
• CANADA Tetra Bio-Pharma Inc. and Panag Pharma Inc. announced the submission of a clinical research application to the Veterinary Drugs Directorate at Health Canada for a veterinary study that will examine the use of a cannabinoid-based drug to treat ocular pain and inflammation in canines. ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
• CANADA – BOVINE TB The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced it has launched an investigation into a case of bovine tuberculosis (TB) in southern British Columbia. The finding should not affect Canada’s current international status in which all provinces are considered bovine TB free. Canada most recently detected bovine TB in a single cow/calf herd in Alberta in September 2016. (Feedstuffs)
• US – EIA Three horses in separate counties in Texas have tested positive for equine infectious anemia, according to the Equine Disease Communication Center. The EIA-positive horses have been euthanized, and the premises will remain under quarantine until requirements for release have been met. (TheHorse.com)
• US – RESEARCH MODELS The FDA has proposed a study to validate a research model for the comparison of blood levels of certain orally-administered canine drugs, in order to provide an alternative approach that animal drug developers can use to generate data needed to support the FDA’s approval of these types of drugs without the use of dogs during the research process. FDA is accepting public comment on a white paper outlining this proposed study for the next 60 days.
