EARNINGS NEWS RELEASES
- Ouro Fino Saúde Animal reported results for the third quarter of 2023. Revenue was R263.7 million (US$54 million), down 6.1% from the prior-year quarter. Net income was R$4.12 million (US$0.85 million), down 91%. (com)
- JBS SA reported results for the third quarter of 2023. Net sales were US$18.7 billion, a 0.6% decline from the comparable prior-year quarter. Net profit was $117 million, an 85% drop compared to a year ago. (company press release)
- Zomedica reported consolidated financial results for the third quarter of 2023. Revenues for the third quarter of 2023 grew 31% to $6.3 million. Non-GAAP EBITDA loss was $0.3 million compared to a loss of $(3.0) million in the prior-year quarter. (seekingalpha)
- Jaguar Health, reported consolidated third-quarter 2023 financial results. Net product revenue (including Canalevia-CA1) was $2.8 million, a decrease of approximately 11% from the prior-year quarter. Total revenue was $4.1 million for the third quarter of 2023, an increase of 42% compared to the prior year period. Mid America Pet Food has voluntarily recalled all the dog and cat food brands it manufactured with a best by date before 10/31/2024, which include Victor, Eagle Mountain, Wayne Feeds and two varieties of Member’s Mark pet foods. - Dogtopia announced it has opened its 250th dog daycare center in Fort Myers, Fla., and recently surpassed 500 signed franchise agreements in the US. (Pet Business)
- NETHERLANDS Fressnapf announced it has acquired Dutch pet retailer Jumper Groep, the second-largest pet retailer in the Netherlands, with 47 stores, 3 franchise locations and 19 shop-in-shop concepts. - UK Cultivated pet food company Good Dog Food announced a rebrand to Meatly in preparation for its upcoming product launch in the United Kingdom. According to Meatly, it will sell the first-ever cultivated pet food on the market. To create its sustainable pet food, Meatly takes a sample of cells from a chicken egg. (Pet Food Processing)
- CANADA ai has entered a long-term partnership with French firm CAPdouleur, marking Sylvester.ai’s first commercial partner. Sylvester.ai will deliver vital visual pain recognition technology to improve CAPdouleur’s pet health application, which enables users to identify, measure and manage acute and chronic pain in pets. Sylvester.ai’s technology detects the severity of pain in cats based on the evaluation of cat facial signals using a smartphone app. (company press release)
- GERMANY Filu, a Munich, Germany-based pet tech startup, announced it has raised EUR 5.1M in Seed funding led by DN Capital; Lukas Keindl, co-founder of US-based Bond Vet, Rivus Ventures, and Auxxo Female Catalyst Fund also participated. Filu builds tech-enabled veterinary clinics that serve for emergencies, surgeries and preventive care; the company also offers dental, diagnostics and telehealth services. Filu’s first veterinary practice opened in Munich in February 2023. (com)
- EU Czech start-up Bene Meat Technologies announced that it is the first company to win European Union registration for laboratory-grown meat for use in pet food. The company plans to boost production to make up to several metric tons per day next year. (Reuters)

- US – ASF RESEARCH The USDA’s Agricultural Research Service announced that researchers have reclassified the number of African swine fever virus strains from 25 to only six unique genotypes. This scientific innovation may help redefine how ASF researchers across the globe classify ASF virus isolates and may make it easier for scientists to develop vaccines that match the different strains circulating in ASF endemic areas across the globe. - CYPRUS – FELINE CORONAVIRUS The strain of feline coronavirus that killed thousands of cats in Cyprus and sickened many others – dubbed FCoV-23 by the researchers – appears to be a new strain that contain RNA sequences from highly virulent pantropic canine coronavirus. The findings, posted as a preprint last week on bioRxiv, could help explain how severe illness managed to spread so widely among cats on the island. (AVMA SmartBrief – Science)
- UK – ALABAMA ROT Researchers at the University of Bristol have isolated a bacterium from material of dozens of confirmed cases of canine cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV), also known as Alabama rot. Researchers are analyzing more than 100 isolates and the work is expected to be completed early in the new year. (AVMA SmartBrief – VetTimes)

Hope for the Human Race
Now that I have your attention, I would like to explain the context behind the headline: The Zero By 2030 initiative for eliminating human deaths from rabies; and resulting pleasure of working collaboratively across private and public organizations towards a common goal.
Last week I attended the United Against Rabies consortium annual meeting, which includes WOAH, WHO, FAO, and UNEP, along with industry, and representatives from around the world – in particular from the most affected countries in Africa and Asia. This group has the stated mission to eliminate deaths from rabies in humans, which predominately comes from infected dogs. WOAH leads the effort behind Dr. Rachel Tidman, who works tirelessly across the world and organizations to move the group towards achieving this worthy objective.
At this year’s summit, which was hosted at the FAO headquarters in Rome, the group welcomed GAVI, which is the preeminent global vaccine alliance for humans into the effort. This means the Human Rabies vaccines will be included on their list of subsidized vaccines, which will create a real ‘One Health’ approach to solving the issue.
The energy of the group is incredible, which was augmented by the FAO HQ environment. We intermingled at lunch with the local FAO staff, and I was summarily impressed by everyone I talked to. The FAO is dedicated to sustainability and defeating hunger and the people there are fully committed to the objective. It was fun to be amongst them, if only for a short while.
Between the Zero by 2030 group, and FAO staff, I still believe there is hope for mankind!
