ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS

> US – BOVINE TUBERCULOSIS   South Dakota animal health officials confirmed that a Hutchinson County cattle herd was infected with tuberculosis. An investigation is underway to determine whether other herds are affected. Two herds were affected in January 2010, but the state was allowed to keep its TB-Accredited-Free state status. BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT

The news this week ranges from new investments in R&D facilities to new companies entering the companion animal diagnostics business. These types of announcements are good for the industry.  New research facilities should mean new innovative products for the equine area in the future.  New diagnostics should help improve the early detection of animal diseases so they can be treated correctly and in a timely manner.  And we should not overlook the impact that new digital technology is bringing to veterinary practitioners in improving the health of their patients.

While animal health is sometimes referred to as the stepchild of the human pharmaceutical industry, one cannot overlook the important role the animal health companies play in increasing the safe supply of animal protein for human consumption and the improved health of our companion animals. Being an employee in animal health is a contribution to society and a benefit to your family.

I’m now back in Dallas after 4 weekends on the farm in South Dakota involved in the annual harvest of the ring-necked pheasant that seems to get smarter and wilder every year.  It’s the second year in a row that all three hunting parties that I hosted limited out!!  So, it was a good year and we left plenty for next year’s seed crop!!

Have a great weekend!!

Ron Brakke
