COMPANY EARNINGS RELEASES
• CVS Group reported financial results for the six months to 31 December 2016. Sales were GBP 129 million ($160 million), an increase of 28% from a year earlier. Although a substantial proportion of the increase came from acquisitions, like-for-like sales grew by 7%. Adjusted earnings (EBITDA) grew from GBP 14.6 million to GBP 20.7 million ($25 million). COMPANY NEWS RELEASES
• Merck Animal Health announced the launch of Bravecto Topical (fluralaner topical solution) for dogs, effective for up to 12 weeks after a single dose. The product joins Bravecto Topical for cats and Bravecto soft chewables for dogs. (Product360)
• Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health announced a strategic collaboration with Novozymes to research, produce, market and sell a portfolio of probiotics designed to provide poultry with beneficial bacteria. The new products will also be developed as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters for poultry hatcheries. As part of the agreement, Boehringer will market and distribute Novozymes’ FloraMax probiotic in the US poultry hatchery industry. (Animal Pharm)
• Dechra Pharmaceuticals PLC announced a licensing agreement with Animal Ethics Pty Ltd to secure the global marketing rights to Tri-Solfen (excluding Australia and New Zealand), a topical product that is sprayed on to a wound which simultaneously anesthetises, relieves pain, controls bleeding and protects against infection. Dechra also invested A$ 18.0 million ($US 14 million) in Animal Ethics’ parent company, Medical Ethics Pty Ltd, to take a 33% stake. (LSE.co.uk)
• Napo Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Jaguar Animal Health, Inc. announced that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement. Under the terms of the Agreement, Jaguar’s stockholders and option and warrant holders will hold approximately 25% of the total outstanding fully diluted equity of Jaguar. The balance of the outstanding fully diluted equity of Jaguar will be held by existing Napo creditors, RSU, option and warrant holders together with new convertible debt and equity investors upon consummation of the merger. If the merger is consummated, Jaguar’s name will be changed to Jaguar Health, Inc., and Napo will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Jaguar, focused on human health. (company press release)
• Kemin Industries announced that it has acquired unique beta-glucan manufacturing technology from Algal Scientific. Algal Scientific focuses on solutions for animal and human nutrition using a unique algae production system, producing highly concentrated products to support gut health in both animals and people. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Feedstuffs)
• Bactana Animal Health announced it closed its first round of funding of undisclosed amount. Bactana is a US-based company developing natural products aimed at reducing the use of antibiotics and hormones in the world’s food supply through enhancement of the gut microbiota via its FPS-4 product platform. The company plans to launch its first nutritional product for calves in early 2018 and begin testing FPS-4 derived products as anti-diarrheal agents for companion animals soon thereafter. • UK Virbac announced the launch of Veterinary HPM Clinical Diets. The new diets are based on a formulation high in protein and low in carbohydrate, of which 90% of the protein is of animal origin, providing clinical nutrition closest to the needs of dogs and cats as carnivores. (Vetsurgeon.org)
• MEXICO Neovia announced the acquisition of Apligén, a Mexican company specializing in the production of premixes, specialty feed and additives. Apligén has an annual turnover of around EUR 30 million and ranks seventh among Mexico’s premix and firm services players. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Feedstuffs)
• EUROPE Bionaturis announced a co-development, registration and commercialization agreement to market Laboratorios Ojer Pharma’s Mupipet in Europe. According to the company, Mupipet is the first antibiotic with a bioadhesive and transparent formulation registered in Europe to treat bacterial skin infections in companion animals. Mupipet will be registered as a prescription veterinary drug for the topical treatment of infections such as pyoderma. (Animal Pharm)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
• CHINA – AVIAN INFLUENZA The OIE reported a large outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in southeast China. 18,500 chickens have already died with a susceptible flock of 190,000 birds likely to be culled. The area has been quarantined and farm premises have been disinfected. (Animal Pharm)
• CHINA – AFRICAN SWINE FEVER RESEARCH Chinese researchers Fudan University in Shanghai have discovered the unique enzyme structure of African swine fever virus (ASFV) may allow drug development to counter the disease. The enzyme contains a unique binding pocket for the building blocks of DNA (nucleotides), not seen in related enzymes in other organisms, and blocking the binding pocket with a drug may be a valuable strategy to treat ASFV infection. • US – HEMP RESEARCH Colorado has passed a law that allows for a study of the feasibility of hemp products in livestock feed and pet food. The use of hemp is currently not allowed in animal feed because the FDA considers hemp an adulterating substance; imported hemp can be used legally in human food products. (WattAgNet)
• US – PROPOSED NEW VET SPECIALTY GROUP The AVMA American Board of Veterinary Specialties has received a petition for recognition of the American College of Veterinary Botanical Medicine as a new recognized veterinary specialty organization. In compliance with ABVS procedures, the board is seeking comment from the public and the profession regarding the proposed specialty organization.
