> Zoetis Inc. announced a lower concentration of Dexdomitor (dexmedetomidine), a sedative and preanesthetic. The 0.1 mg/ml dosage is designed to make it more convenient for veterinarians to accurately administer doses for dogs less than 20 pounds and cats less than seven pounds. (company press release)
> Novartis Animal Health announced the launch of Florvio (florfenicol) 2.3% Concentrate Solution, a broad-spectrum antibiotic formulated to treat swine respiratory disease. Florvio 2.3% Concentrate Solution is administered through drinking water and is intended for treating respiratory disease in nursery pigs from 8 to 13 weeks old as well as grower and finisher pigs. > Harrisvaccines announced it has been granted USDA conditional licensure of the company’s Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv) Vaccine, RNA utilizing its SirraVax RNA Particle Technology. This is the first USDA conditional license granted for a PEDv vaccine since the initial outbreak. (PRNewswire)
> Hill’s announced the launch of Prescription Diets Stews, gently cooked, bite-sized chunks of real chicken, beef or tuna. The Stews are available for canine and feline c/d diets, with more varieties coming soon. (company press release)
> Neogen Corporation announced that it has signed an exclusive licensing agreement with SenesTech, Inc., to manufacture and market a rodent control product that uses fertility control to manage rat populations. Neogen expects to develop a market-ready product within a year. (company press release)
> Aratana Therapeutics announced an exclusive license agreement with Vet-Stem for the latter’s novel allogeneic stem cell therapy technology. Aratana will pay $500,000 upon signing of the license as a reimbursement to Vet-Stem for a portion of its past development expenses and will be responsible for funding future budgeted development. Aratana will also pay up to $4.5 million in success-based development and regulatory milestones, as well as tiered royalties upon potential commercialization of the stem cell therapy. Aratana will also have the exclusive right to negotiate expansion of the agreement to include European Union countries during calendar 2014. (Animal Pharm)
> Master Vet Products LLC announced it has acquired the exclusive veterinary sales and marketing rights to the Vetzlife natural product line, which includes Vetzlife Oral Care Dental Spray and Gel, @-Ease natural anxiety relief, and a new Wound Care product for cats and dogs. > Bio Health Solutions announced that RenAvast has now been approved for distribution in China, Taiwan and the Czech Republic. Distribution and regulatory approval in Brazil, Thailand, Canada and the rest of Europe is pending and is expected within the coming months. (Digital Journal)
> Preventia Diagnostics announced the launch of Spaychek Plus, a new one-step, 10-minute, in-house test to determine spay status in dogs and cats. Spaychek Plus detects the presence of anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) in the circulatory system; AMH is produced by ovarian follicles in females and by sertoli cells in males. (DVM360.com)
> GeneSeek announced the opening of new facilities featuring more than 30,000 square feet of laboratory and office space – compared to its previous 13,000 square feet. GeneSeek’s technology employs high-resolution DNA genotyping for identity and trait analysis in beef, dairy and a variety of plants and animals. (company press release)
> Vedco, Inc. announced they have entered into a multi-year extension of their current supply agreement with Datamars. Datamars is the developer of the Microfindr Slim, a revolutionary, new, polymer microchip. (company press release)
> Animart Inc. announced the completion of the acquisition process of Michigan Veterinary Supply (MVS), a leading animal health supplier to Michigan dairies. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Feedstuffs)
> American Health Service announced that they now carry and distribute AHS Needles and Syringes. (company press release)
> Pet insurance provider Trupanion has filed for a $75 million initial public offering, applying to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “TRUP.” Last year Trupanion lost $8.2 million on $83.8 million in revenue. The company has never made money and has an accumulated deficit of $41 million. (Seattle Times)
> A 10-year partnership between the Banfield Pet Hospital chain and Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Veterinary Medicine is scheduled to end Nov. 30, when the university will assume what it called “full autonomy” over the facility. The hospital name will change from the Banfield Veterinary Clinical Center to the WesternU Pet Wellness Center. (Veterinary Practice News)
> The owners of three thoroughbreds affected by an overdose of pyrimethamine at an Ocala, Fla., training facility have filed lawsuits against Wickliffe Veterinary Pharmacy, the company that prepared the compounded drug. The suit alleges the company was or should have been aware that the drug containing toltrazuril and pyrimethamine may have been misformulated. (AVMA SmartBrief – Bloodhorse.com)
> Garmin International Inc., announced two new GPS-enabled collars, the TT 15 and T 5, for its industry-leading Astro and Alpha dog tracking and training systems. (Business Wire)
> EUROPE Nutreco has decided not to divest its compound feed and meat businesses in Spain and Portugal. The Spanish and Portuguese businesses will now remain part of Nutreco under the new name ’Business Unit Compound Feed & Meat Iberia.’ (Animal Pharm)
> AFRICA Nutreco announced the formation of a joint venture with Durante, a leading supplier of fish feed in Nigeria and an existing distribution partner. The joint venture, called Skretting Nigeria, will invest in the local production of extruded fish feed to supply the aquaculture sector in Nigeria and West Africa. (Animal Pharm)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
> US – FEED REGULATIONS The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) filed comments on June 6, 2014, with the FDA requesting an exemption of animal food from provisions made to the Reportable Food Registry (Sec. 417) of the Federal Food Drug & Cosmetic Act (FD&C) as amended by the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). According to AFIA, Congress’ intent when generating Sec. 211 of FSMA, which amends Sec. 417 of the FD&C regarding the Reportable Food Registry requirements, was only designated for human food products and not intended to affect animal feed or petfood. > US – E COLI TEST Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine has developed a molecular assay that can detect and quantify major genes specific for E. coli O157. The test is rapid and less labor-intensive than existing detection methods, and can be automated to test many samples in a short period of time. (Wisconsin Ag Connection)

There is also the announcement of a USDA conditional approval for the first vaccine to prevent PEDv in swine. The product could assist the swine industry in recovery of swine numbers that have declined the past year due to the disease. Score another one for innovation.
We also have one of the leading pet insurance companies going public. The current pace of IPOs will enable us to track the stock price for a number of animal health companies. The amount of funds brought into the animal health industry by small and large firms going public is good for the industry. Fresh capital is always needed!
