ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS

>  GERMANY – HERPESVIRUS  After polar bears at Wuppertal Zoo in Germany became severely ill and died, necropsy results confirmed they were infected with a recombinant strain of equine herpesvirus carried by the zoo’s zebras. The presence of so many species from around the world sometimes allows for viruses to jump between species in zoos, and EHV1 has caused problems in other facilities among black bears, guinea pigs and Thomson’s gazelles. BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT

Based on the small number of announcements this week it appears that many of you have decided to start the Labor Day weekend early. Surely this means that your 2012 revenue versus budget for the third quarter is in good shape and that you need a break in the action before heading into the final quarter of the year!.

We continue to believe the full year 2012 revenue results will be similar to 2011 for most companies. The market in both food and companion animals remains positive even though the national and international news provides some concerns. What impact is the drought likely to have? Probably not that much in 2012 but if it continues, 2013 could be a more difficult year. Increasing food and fuel prices will extract disposable income from other sectors, including veterinary services and products. Be cautious with your budgeting for 2013, except for the amount set aside for consultants!!

Have a great weekend, and we’ll see many of you at the Kansas City Corridor Homecoming Hoedown or the Animal Health Investment Forum next week!
