> Teva Animal Health announced the launch of Alenza, a supplement that contains a proprietary bioflavonoid formulation derived from natural botanicals combined with powerful antioxidants to support normal metabolic processes in a dog’s body for ongoing comfort, peak condition and quality of life. > Eco Animal Health Group reported that the FDA has approved Aivlosin (tylvalosin) 625 mg/g water soluble granules for swine for the treatment of ileitis (porcine proliferative enteropathy). (RTTNews)
> Mars Veterinary announced that it has acquired the Canine Heritage XL Breed Test product previously offered by Scidera Canine LLC in the canine DNA breed identification market. The acquisition stems in part from the resolution of a patent infringement suit brought by Mars associated with its Wisdom Panel canine DNA breed identification product. (PRNewswire)
> NEW ZEALAND Virbac SA announced the acquisition of all of the shares of Stockguard Animal Health Ltd. and Stockguard Laboratories Ltd. in Hamilton, New Zealand. Created in 1987, Stockguard develops, manufactures and markets a range of products for the dairy cattle and sheep markets in New Zealand. Stockguard’s business amounts to around EUR 5 million in sales. Financial terms were not disclosed. (company website)
> SPAIN Animedica Group of Germany announced that it has taken over all shares of the Spanish company Industrial Veterinaria S.A. (INVESA), from ESPIGA and its co-owners. INVESA employs approximately 200 employees and sells products in more than 80 countries through its subsidiaries and export partners. Financial terms were not disclosed. (company press release)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
> US – CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE Two mule deer taken recently from west Texas tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease, the first time the illness has been documented in Texas. Texas is the 19th state to document the disease in its free-ranging or captive deer herd. (Chron.com)
> CHINA – NEWCASTLE DISEASE Research by Chinese scientists has discovered a new strain of Newcastle disease in swine. According to a research paper published in Virology Journal, Xiny10 is considerably different from JL01, a previous swine Newcastle disease. The new strain was found from an area where swine and poultry mix in Henan Province, China. The research suggests that the virus might stem from the vaccine strain La Sota, which has been widely used as a live virus vaccine in China. (Animal Pharm)
> WORLD – RACTOPAMINE The Codex Alimentarius Commission, the international body responsible for setting food safety standards, has approved by a narrow margin maximum residue limits (MRLs) for the feed additive ractopamine hypochloride. However, the European Commission’s Health and Consumer directorate said it remains strongly opposed to the adoption of MRLs for ractopamine in pigs and cattle. The Commission also adopted global food safety standards for narasin and monensin. (Animal Pharm)
> GERMANY – BSE Researchers have found that the autonomic nervous system can show signs of infection with BSE prior to involvement of the central nervous system. Previous research had indicated that the autonomic nervous system becomes affected by the disease only after the central nervous system (has been infected. published. The research was published in The American Journal of Pathology. (ScienceDaily.com)
> US – FOOD SAFETY The USDA’s Food Safety & Inspection Service (FSIS) announced new steps to safeguard the food supply. Under the new system, one sample can be tested for as many as 55 pesticide chemicals, nine kinds of antibiotics, various metals and, eventually, more than 50 other chemicals. FSIS is also revamping its scheduled sampling program to increase the annual number of samples per slaughter class from 300 to 800. (Feedstuffs)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
The news this week again points out the need for solutions to various diseases in animals. Every week our newsletter has reports of one of more disease outbreaks in animal health somewhere around the world. So, when we are asked if there are new product opportunities in animal health, it’s not difficult to point out areas of need to improve the health of animals and poultry.
We also note that the USDA’s Food Safety & Inspection Service (FSIS) plans to expand its testing of meat and other foods to help insure safety of the food supply. This increased activity hopefully will reduce the number of food recalls and improve confidence in the consumers mind that our food supply is safe. Many of the past recalls are related to the handling of the food in the processing plants and not the safety of the animal health products used in production. Some recent articles and TV coverage on antibiotic usage in animal production creates concern in the consumers mind that in our opinion is overblown and unjustified. The animal health industry needs to remain diligent in telling the story of the value it prints to the table.
