Neogen’s Animal Safety Division led the company’s first quarter revenue increase, with sales up 13% to $9.1 million in FY 2006. The quarter marked the 50th consecutive profitable quarter from operations for the company, and was the 54th of the past 59 quarters when Neogen reported revenue increases as compared with the previous year. The positive impact of the October 2004 acquisition of Milburn Distributions on Webster’s first quarter sales was largely offset by the loss of revenues related to two factors: the decision by the manufacturer of ProHeart 6 to voluntarily recall this product in last year’s third quarter and the impact of the extra week in last year’s first quarter. (Feedstuffs online)   >   Smithfield Foods reported fourth-quarter earnings of $85.4 million on sales of $2.92 billion. The earnings marked a 30% drop from the $122.7 million it earned in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2004, which included the sale of Schneider Corp. and income from discontinued operations. With those one-time gains removed, profits last year would have totaled $71.1 million. For the full year, Smithfield earned $296.2 million, an increase over the $227.1 million earned in 2004. Excluding the one-time gains, earnings last year would have been $162.7 million. Sales increased by over $2 billion, to $11.35 billion from $9.27 billion. (Meating Place)

Turnover from CEVA DIF, CEVA’s new Turkish subsidiary, will only be consolidated from the second quarter 2005. The Animal Health division increased 4% to EURO 52.9 million ($68 million). This performance is particularly linked to the EU results on the traditional farming market and the pet market. Results are more contrasted in the International Zone with economic difficulties in North America and North Africa and a very good performance in Eastern Europe and Latin America. Excluding the ProHeart 6 sales in last year’s fourth quarter and the impact of the two acquisitions, Webster’s sales increased approximately 12% in the fourth quarter.  Webster’s sales for the year ended April 30 were $292 million. (Business Wire)   >  PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc. reported financial results for the first quarter ended April 30, 2005.  Net sales in the first quarter of 2005 were $479.6 million with a comparable store net sales increase of 5.2%. Overall, net sales increased 12.6% over the first quarter of fiscal 2004.  Net earnings for the first quarter increased to $17.2 million, compared to net earnings of $15.8 million in the prior year first quarter.  Excluding debt retirement costs
