Bayer/Brakke Study Reveals Gaps in Perception of Veterinary Care Between Vets and Pet Owners
Important Opportunities for Veterinarians to Invigorate their Pet Owner Relationships are Presented Shawnee, Kan. July 18, 2011 – While much has been reported about an end to the ongoing recession in the U.S., the impact is still being felt in the veterinary community. Fifty-one percent of veterinarians reported a net decrease in patient visits over the last two years, while 42 percent said that revenues decreased in 2010 as compared to 2009. This decline continues a trend that has been documented over the last decade, even while the number of dogs and cats has increased in the U.S. Yet in spite of these issues, there are steps veterinarians can take to reverse the trend and improve pet health, according to a new study regarding the demand for veterinary services announced today at the annual convention of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Called the Bayer Veterinary Care Usage Study, the research was conducted by Bayer HealthCare LLC, Animal Health Division in cooperation with Brakke Consulting and the National Commission on Veterinary Economic Issues (NCVEI). Results announced today were from the second major phase of the research, a national study among veterinarians. Results from an earlier stage national study of pet owners were announced in January. This month Brakke Consulting, Inc. celebrates 25 years in business. Now the leading consultancy in the animal health and nutrition industries, the firm established by Ron Brakke in 1986 has witnessed tremendous change. For example: • In 1986, the five largest animal health companies represented 20% of the industry; today the top 5 account for 60%. • In 1986, food animal products accounted for over 85% of the global market; today they represent about half. • In 1986, medicinal feed additives for livestock were 50% of the US market; today they represent 11%. “The timing was fortuitous,” Brakke says. “During our time in business the animal health industry has transitioned from largely an agricultural industry to one driven primarily by growth in the companion animal market. “In 1986, none of the major heartworm, flea-tick or pain management drugs were on the market. Today they are the leading products in the industry. As the market shifted it created tremendous opportunities for expert assistance,” Brakke says. Before starting his consultancy, Brakke was president of Zoecon Industries, a supplier of insecticides for livestock and pets. Under his leadership Zoecon grew from $15 million in sales in 1975 to $125 million in 1985. Its parent company sold Zoecon in 1983. New report profiles the US small animal pain management market
A new study from Brakke Consulting takes an in-depth look at pain management products for dogs and cats. ”The pain management market has been one of the fastest growing areas in animal health, with a variety of new active ingredients and novel formulations in the past 15 years,” said Lynn Fondon, senior consultant of Brakke Consulting. “Sales of small animal analgesics have increased 20-fold since the introduction of Rimadyl, the first of the new-generation NSAIDs, in 1996.” The study, Pain Management Products for Dogs and Cats, profiles the veterinary market for analgesics, both veterinary and human products, as well as nutritional supplements and therapeutic diets for joint support. The report includes an overview of pain management in veterinary medicine, leading product sales and pricing, and a discussion of new and developing products. The report also includes a survey of small animal veterinarians. “Our veterinary survey found that veterinarians are largely satisfied with the available products for dogs, but feel there is a need for safer analgesics for cats, particularly those that can be used long-term,” comments Dr. Fondon. The report – published annually by Brakke for the past 7 years – gathered information from a variety of sources, including published information, industry interviews and a survey of over 200 small animal veterinarians.
