New report profiles the US small animal pain management market
A new study from Brakke Consulting takes an in-depth look at pain management products for dogs and cats. ”The pain management market has been one of the fastest growing areas in animal health, with a variety of new active ingredients and novel formulations in the past 15 years,” said Lynn Fondon, senior consultant of Brakke Consulting. “Sales of small animal analgesics have increased 20-fold since the introduction of Rimadyl, the first of the new-generation NSAIDs, in 1996.” The study, Pain Management Products for Dogs and Cats, profiles the veterinary market for analgesics, both veterinary and human products, as well as nutritional supplements and therapeutic diets for joint support. The report includes an overview of pain management in veterinary medicine, leading product sales and pricing, and a discussion of new and developing products. The report also includes a survey of small animal veterinarians. “Our veterinary survey found that veterinarians are largely satisfied with the available products for dogs, but feel there is a need for safer analgesics for cats, particularly those that can be used long-term,” comments Dr. Fondon. The report – published annually by Brakke for the past 8 years – gathered information from a variety of sources, including published information, industry interviews and a survey of over 200 small animal veterinarians. Pets Feel the Bite of Recession
Fewer pet owners going to the vet; cat owners decrease spending 20 percent in three basic pet care categories Kansas City, Mo. – A survey of 1,200 dog and cat owners by The Pert Group and Brakke Consulting found veterinarians continue to be key influencers and a primary channel for pet products. But, changes in consumer behavior and potential legislation could erode their role. The study showed dog and cat owners rely on veterinarians as their primary channel for pet products, including flea and tick control, heartworm prevention, joint health, pain management and therapeutic food. But, survey respondents said they visited the veterinarian nearly 20 percent less in 2011 than they did in 2007 – if they went at all. In 2011, 77 percent of survey respondents said they took their dog or cat to the veterinarian, compared to 88 percent in 2007, when the study was first conducted. “Dogs and cats are feeling the bite of the recession as pet owners put a leash on pet care expenses,” said Susan Spaulding, executive vice president and principal at The Pert Group. “The recession has not only decreased what consumers spend on their own health,* but what they spend at the veterinarian.” Spending by cat owners who had not taken their pet to the veterinarian in the last year was down across

The Pet Owner Channel Use Study, produced by Brakke Consulting and The Pert Group, is a national survey of 1,200 dog and cat owners that examines purchase frequency by type of outlet for seven major categories of products. It explores channel switching, and the importance of convenience, price and veterinary recommendations on buying decisions. This 200-page report shows significant shifts in channel preference, veterinarian influence and professional channel vulnerabilities compared to a similar study four years ago. A special feature of this new report compares differences in behaviors between pet owners who regularly visit the vet and those that don’t.
