New Study: Raising Livestock With Fewer or No Antibiotics
Livestock and poultry producers face major changes with the loss of shared use antibiotics for growth promotion and the new Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) effective Jan. 1, 2017. Some producers are even exploring antibiotic-free production in response to consumer demand. “New Strategies for Health and Performance in US Livestock and Poultry Production,” a new study from Brakke Consulting, examines how producers are responding to these new challenges. It examines: • Changes in production systems • New approaches, technologies and products producers are adopting • New feed additives they are considering • Who and what most influence decision-making • What initial information is necessary to entice a producer to investigate a new product or approach • Quality of information and support from specific supplier companies • How producers will measure results of changes The study will be based on both qualitative and quantitative research among producers, veterinarians and nutritionists in beef, dairy, poultry and swine production. The study will be fielded in late summer with reports available in December 2016. Reports will include a comprehensive set of analytics, including means and median, significance testing, mean variance analysis, regression analysis and peer group comparisons. Pet Ownership Findings Provide Thorough Understanding of Future Industry Challenges

This study comes off the heels of their 2015 Pet Pharmaceutical Market Study, and offers deeper insight into the three separate generations of current and future pet owners. The research also provides implications to veterinarians and the pet industry as a whole. Key findings include: 1. Baby Boomers have driven the private veterinary practice to what it is today. However, the Boomer generation is beginning to phase out and newer generations of pet owners have modified value systems and needs. 2. The overall pet category is strong, but traditional veterinary practice models will require change. While overall category spending is not expected to change, the spending will be far more diversified. This study points to a number of different veterinary care models that are preferred in the near future. 3. There are fewer differences between Hispanic and non-Hispanic pet owners than you might think. The Millennial generation is especially similar across ethnic lines. Pain Management Market Profiled in New Report from Brakke Consulting
Brakke Consulting’s latest multiclient study takes an in-depth look at pain management products for dogs and cats. ”The pain management market has been one of the fastest growing areas in animal health, with a variety of new active ingredients and novel formulations in the past 20 years,” said Lynn Fondon DVM MBA, senior consultant of Brakke Consulting. “Sales of small animal analgesics have increased 20-fold since the introduction of Rimadyl, the first of the new-generation NSAIDs, in 1996.” The study, Pain Management Products for Dogs and Cats, profiles the veterinary market for analgesics, both veterinary and human products, as well as nutritional supplements and therapeutic diets for joint support. The report includes an overview of pain management in veterinary medicine, leading product sales and pricing, and a discussion of new and developing products, including a number of novel molecules. The report also includes a survey of small animal veterinarians. “Our veterinary survey found that veterinarians are largely satisfied with the available products for dogs, but feel there is a need for safer analgesics for cats, particularly those that can be used long-term,” comments Dr. Fondon. The report – published annually by Brakke for the past decade – gathered information from a variety of sources, including published information, industry interviews and a survey of over 300 small animal veterinarians.
