BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT

Based on the amount of news this week, it appears some managers are taking a short break after closing out the first quarter of 2019. We continue to be amazed at the number of new companies or established companies not known for being in the animal health or pet products business entering the space either directly or via agreements with others more familiar with this marketplace. The companion animal business, with its broad range of products – many of which are not drugs or chemicals – continues to attract investments in both the veterinary and OTC channels. It is a dynamic marketplace which it is exciting to be a part of now and in the future.

There is one story in this newsletter that caught my eye: the announcement by Because Animals, Inc. that they will be entering the “clean meat” pet food market in 2020 by producing via biotechnology a cell-based form of mouse meat to be put in a cat treat. Being a cat owner for many years I’m not sure how one should respond to this innovation, other than that I assume real mice would prefer this approach!

Have a great weekend! We hope those of you in the middle of another late season blizzard will be blessed next week with some warm dry weather.

Ron Brakke
