New report profiles the US flea, tick and heartworm markets
A new study from Brakke Consulting takes an in-depth look at flea, tick and heartworm products, the largest segment of the companion animal market. ”The flea control and heartworm preventatives market has been one of the most innovative areas in animal health, with a variety of new active ingredients and novel formulations,” said Lynn Fondon, senior consultant of Brakke Consulting. “Sales of flea control products have tripled in size since the introduction of Program, the first of the new-generation products, in 1995.” The study, The US Flea Control and Heartworm Markets, profiles the veterinary and OTC markets for flea and tick products and heartworm preventatives, including veterinary product sales and pricing, advertising expenditures, and new and developing products. The report also includes a survey of small animal veterinarians. “This year’s study is especially interesting because of Bayer’s move into the OTC channel in February 2010, as well as Frontline Top Spot going off-patent this year,” comments Dr. Fondon. The report – published annually by Brakke for the past 14 years – gathered information from a variety of sources, including published information, industry interviews and a survey of over 200 small animal veterinarians. The US Flea Control and Heartworm Markets report is available from Brakke Consulting for $5,500. For more information, interested companies should contact Lynn Fondon at 972.243.4033. About Brakke

Brakke Consulting and Bayer Animal Health Announce Research Project to Help Reverse Decline in Veterinary Visits
A comprehensive research initiative was announced today by Bayer HealthCare’s Animal Health Division and Brakke Consulting. The research initiative will investigate reasons for the decline in companion animal veterinary visits during the past decade and identify ways to reverse the trend. While the population of dogs and cats in the U.S. has steadily increased year over year, one million fewer veterinary visits were recorded in 2006 versus 2001, according to data published by the American Veterinary Medical Association. A more recent study demonstrated that the decline has accelerated during the recent recession, with more than half of veterinarians seeing stagnant to declining visits. Bayer Animal Health and Brakke Consulting’s research will seek to understand the causes behind the reduction in companion animal veterinary visits, and to determine how veterinarians can increase them. “Bayer Animal Health is committed to developing solutions to increase awareness of the importance of veterinary care visits to pet health,” said Peter Ryan, vice president of Bayer Animal Health’s companion animal business unit. “Pets that are not routinely taken to the veterinarian are pets that are not receiving the medical attention they need to live healthy lives.” Bayer Animal Health and Brakke Consulting are collaborating on the study with the National Commission on Veterinary Economic Issues (NCVEI), a professional organization dedicated to improving economic conditions in veterinary medicine.
