What has changed, only the odds. The risk of FMD entering the USA from Southern Africa in the late 2000s was significantly lower as the disease was contained to a small geographical area, but now it is widespread in cattle (beef and dairy), swine and wildlife, which increases the spillover risk.

先週 we asked you about exports of animal-protein from Brazil- Your votes- Beef (63%), chicken (21%) and pork (16%).
On a volume basis, chicken meat is the largest, about 5.3 Metric tonnes (Mt) per year with beef coming in at 3 Mt exported per year. But on a value basis, beef is the largest at $13 billion, just ahead of chicken, which is about $10 billion. Pork significantly trails chicken and beef in volume and value at about 1.4 Mt exported per year, which is worth about $3.3B. And by the way, these are 2024 numbers…Brazil had record exports of pork and beef in late 2025, with poultry exports hitting an 11-month record.

The first outbreak of FMD in the US and Canada was in 1870 and in Mexico, it was in the 1920s. The last outbreak of FMD in Canada was 1952 and in Mexico, 1954.
