動物病院の薬局にとって新たな競合相手が現れた。CVSファーマシーがペット用医薬品事業に参入すると発表したのだ。CVS店舗では、寄生虫駆除剤、皮膚科用製品、鎮痛剤、循環器系疾患治療薬など、様々なペット用品の処方箋調剤を開始する予定だ。.

動物病院は3万5000軒近くあるのに、CVSの店舗はわずか9000軒しかない。なぜこれがそんなに大きな問題なのか？それは、交通渋滞だ。ペットの飼い主は、動物病院には年に1回か数回しか行かないのが普通だが、ドラッグストアには月に何度も行く。さらに、CVSでは、ペットの薬も、飼い主が自分の処方箋で受けられるのと同じ自動補充サービスや宅配サービスの対象となっている。もう一つ。多くの人間の薬はペットにも処方されており、それらの処方箋はすでに地元の薬局で調剤されている。つまり、多くのペットの飼い主がCVSで処方箋を受け取るのは今回が初めてではないのだ。（私は今週、シカゴのダウンタウンにある大型CVSに立ち寄った。薬剤師はこのプログラムの存在は知っていたが、開始日に関する研修や情報は何も受けていなかった。）

もちろん、誰もがCVSで買い物をするわけではありません。しかし、CVSがペット医薬品事業をどれほど積極的に推進していくかは興味深いところです。もし成功すれば、8,000店舗を擁するウォルグリーンも間違いなく追随するでしょう。.

CVSが顧客へのサービス向上と店舗への愛着を深めるために、あらゆる手段を模索しているのは間違いないだろう。実際、CVSの来店客数も減少している。昨年、ウォルグリーンは1,200店舗、CVSは約300店舗を閉鎖した。ペット用医薬品は、両社の業績回復の起爆剤となるのだろうか？

Last week, we asked what you thought about the CMA rule requiring veterinary practices to disclose ownership via signage at the premises and online.  An overwhelming 73% of respondents would support this rule, while 17% would not. Only 10% were not sure.  Seems like there is an opportunity for practices to adopt this disclosure even if it isn’t a rule.

This week, a simple question: In three years’ time, do you think retail pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens will become meaningful competitors to veterinary practices for pet medications?
