BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT

It appears that companies are so busy completing their 2011 plans and forecasts that they’re failing to create current news.  As we now approach the last 6 weeks of 2010 it’s time to start putting on the creative caps to figure out how to address the issues that you’ll face next year.  We believe there will be a number of them including high feed grain prices for the food production area.  High feed grain prices will also impact the cost of raw materials for most pet foods.

Another issue of importance is the trends in leading veterinary flea and tick products selling in the OTC market.  How will Bayer’s move to the OTC channel impact the market?  Will other firms attempt to change their market channel strategy in 2011?  How many new generic flea & tick products will enter the major flea & tick markets in 2011?

Hopefully, every company will be launching new innovative products in 2011 so the industry will see new revenue growth.  At the present time there seems to be a “hush” related to new product introductions for 2011.  Is that because there are very few, or are new products tied up in the regulatory process?  During our last visit to one of the regulatory bodies in 2010 we were told that this agency would be approving a record number of new products in 2010.  Maybe we’re missing the press releases on the new product approvals!!  There are additional issues that companies need to be concerned about in 2011 that we’ll address in future newsletters.

Finally, I’m back in Dallas after four great weekends of hunting the wily ringneck pheasant in South Dakota. Thanks to all of those that participated. Each of you assisted in making this one of our most successful hunts in several years. The final combined score was hunters 305 and pheasants 210.

Have a great weekend and enjoy some of this beautiful fall weather!!

Ron Brakke
