> Merial announced the addition of Recombitek Equine Influenza Virus vaccine to its recombinant vaccine line – the first and only equine influenza vaccine that uses canarypox-vectored technology in the US. Recombitek Equine Influenza Virus vaccine is proven against a recent, highly virulent American strain of equine influenza (N/5/03) and helps stop the spread of influenza by eliminating viral shedding. > IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. announced that it has entered into an agreement with Osmetech plc to acquire Osmetech’s Critical Care Division for $44.9 million. The Critical Care Division develops, manufactures, and sells a line of Point of Care electrolyte and blood gas analyzers and related consumable products for the human market while also serving as IDEXX’s OEM supplier of the VetStat analyzer and line of associated consumables. For the six months ended June 30, 2006, revenues of Osmetech’s Critical Care Division were approximately $8.6 million, of which approximately $2.9 million were sales of VetStat instruments and consumables to IDEXX. > Dechra is expanding its international product range with the acquisition of the global intellectual property rights to Equidone (domperidone), an equine product made by US-based Equi-Tox. Equidone is available in the US under special license for the treatment of fescue toxicity, a condition caused by ingestion of a fungus found in fescue grass. The company is to pay $1.75 million in cash for the intellectual property, of which $500,000 will be paid upon completion of the deal. The remainder will be paid following licensing approval by the FDA, with submission planned for 2008. Dechra will also pay Equi-Tox royalties of 10% on future revenues. (Animal Pharm)
> Cargill Animal Nutrition, DENCO LLC and Golden Lyk LLC, a subsidiary of DENCO, announced an agreement for Cargill to provide distribution, marketing and nutritional expertise to Golden Lyk supplement products. The agreement includes a toll manufacturing arrangement, as well as exclusive marketing rights to Golden Lyk products under a trademark licensing agreement. In addition, there is an option agreement for the future purchase of the Golden Lyk business. Golden Lyk’s technology utilizes natural protein and energy sources in supplement formulations for cattle, horses, sheep and deer. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Feedstuffs online)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
> VIETNAM – AVIAN INFLUENZA Tests have shown that some 5,500 month-old ducks and 500 chickens died of the virulent H5N1 avian influenza strain in the southern Mekong Delta provinces of Vietnam. Animal health officials have disinfected areas surrounding the outbreaks and have been ordered to cull all poultry in the neighborhood. This is Vietnam’s first outbreak in a year. (AP)
> SOUTH KOREA – DIOXIN IN US BEEF SHIPMENT South Korea’s national quarantine service reported that it discovered traces of dioxin in one of the three US beef shipments it rejected for containing banned bone fragments. South Korea’s quarantine service said the dioxin level was 6.26 picograms, which exceeds the 5-picogram limit established by Seoul (Meating Place)
> SOUTH KOREA – CLONED DOG South Korean researchers have produced three cloned copies of a female Afghan hound. The three identical puppies, called Bona, Peace and Hope, were born in June and July this year. The same team at Seoul University was credited with producing the world’s first cloned dog last year, an Afghan hound named Snuppy. (VOAnews.com)
> NETHERLANDS – GENOMIC SELECTION Euribrid announced the first large-scale commercial use of “Genomic Selection” technology in poultry. This is also the first time such a large set of DNA markers has been used in commercial animal breeding. Genomic Selection provides an accurate assessment of breeding values of animals without having to measure traits. Furthermore, the information is available not just for a single gene or trait, but also for all the genes and all traits at the same time. (ThePigSite.com)
