> Vical Incorporated announced that the USDA has granted the company’s licensee Merial Limited full licensure for its ONCEPT canine melanoma vaccine, a therapeutic DNA vaccine designed to aid in extending survival of dogs with oral melanoma. (Globe Newswire)

> John Morrell & Co., a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods Inc., announced that it has become sole owner of Premium Pet Health LLC. John Morrell, a producer of processed meat and fresh pork, already had a 51% interest in Premium, a supplier for pet-food processors. Details were not disclosed. (APPA SmartBrief)
> AKC Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR) announced the addition of an ISO microchip to its product line as well as two new microchip incentive programs – Free Microchip or Prepaid Enrollment – giving veterinarians more flexibility in providing permanent identification services for their clients’ pets. AKC CAR’s new ISO microchip is the accepted microchip for pets traveling to and from the European Union and Canada. (company press release)
> VetCentric and ImproMed, Inc., announced the integration of VetCentric’s One-Click Home Delivery into Infinity practice management software. VetCentric also announced an affiliation with Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc. that will enables Hill’s Science Diet and Hill’s Prescription Diet pet foods to reach to both veterinarians and consumers directly. > EUROPE Janssen Animal Health announced that it has acquired the distribution rights for a range of sedatives and anaesthetics for small and large animals, including Dexdomitor, Domitor and Antisedan. ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
> US – PARASITE DIAGNOSTICS Researchers at Oregon State University and the University of Georgia have developed an improved, more efficient method to test for the most serious of the parasitic worms in sheep. The new lectin staining test is based on a peanut agglutinin that binds to eggs of the parasite and can be easily visualized with a microscope using ultraviolet light. The test requires only a small amount of feces, and results are available in as little as two days. Findings about the new test were just published in Veterinary Parasitology, a professional journal. (Eurekalert)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
It appears from the lack of news that most companies are either in sales meetings or preparing diligently for the upcoming NAVC in Orlando, which begins this weekend. We hope to see many of you there. It’s possible that we’ll have some year-end sales results announced by or during NAVC. All indications are that the industry is off to a fast start in 2010, with a number of changes in the distribution of products and services stimulated by the large mergers that have recently occurred in both the manufacturing and distribution sectors.
Earlier this week we learned of the passing of Majon Huff of Colorado Serum, one of the pioneers in the industry. Majon was 97 years of age and, according to his son Joe, continued to come to work up until early December of 2009 when his health began to fail.
In early 2008 I was privileged to be able to interview Majon regarding his thoughts on the development of the animal health industry. Majon’s thoughts and files full of information dating back to the 1930’s and 1940’s were extremely helpful in the production of the book “The US Animal Health Industry: Its pioneers and their legacy of Innovation.” Majon was instrumental in the formation of what would become the Animal Health Institute in 1941, which still today collectively represents the animal health industry and its constituents in Washington D.C. We will forever be indebted to Majon for his support and insights into the development of the industry. The industry has lost one of its pioneers and he will be missed. Our condolences go out to the Huff family regarding his passing.
