A oportunidade do mercado equino
No boletim informativo desta semana, a BI anunciou a aprovação de uma terapia para o tratamento da desregulação da insulina em cavalos e pôneis na Grã-Bretanha. Algumas semanas atrás, mencionamos a publicação de um ensaio clínico controlado, revisado por pares, na área de medicina regenerativa equina, para uma matriz de tecido conjuntivo alogênico do cordão umbilical equino. Será este um sinal de renovado interesse em produtos para equinos? Como amante de cavalos há mais de 30 anos, certamente espero que sim. O setor equino tem lutado há muito tempo para encontrar um nicho de mercado definido – deve fazer parte da área de animais de companhia, estar associado ao gado ou constituir uma equipe dedicada exclusivamente a ele? Do ponto de vista de pesquisa e desenvolvimento, o número relativamente baixo de famílias proprietárias de cavalos (a pesquisa da American Pet Products Association de 2025 estima esse número em 2 milhões) e a falta de dados recentes e confiáveis sobre o número de cavalos tornam extremamente difícil criar projeções de mercado financeiramente justificáveis. Assim, por muito tempo, o mercado de saúde equina foi visto como uma espécie de Velho Oeste – com pouca necessidade de aprovações tradicionais de produtos pela FDA ou investimentos em soluções. No entanto, parece haver uma pequena mudança. O relatório "Impacto Econômico da Indústria Equina 2023", do American Horse Council, trouxe algumas informações importantes: 6,6 milhões de cavalos, segmentados em setores como corridas, recreação e competição, e, mais recentemente, a legitimação da medicina regenerativa (PRP) e das modalidades de controle da dor (laser, quiropraxia, massagem) para humanos. Embora sempre seja menor que os mercados mais amplos de gatos, cachorros e animais de criação, o setor equino não deve ser negligenciado. Não deixe que seus números definam toda a história.
