ANIMAL HEALTH INVESTMENT FORUM
NOW ACCEPTING PRESENTER APPLICATIONS THROUGH APRIL 6
The KC Animal Health Corridor is now accepting applications to present at the 2018 KC Animal Health Investment Forum on August 21 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Now in its 10th year, the Forum is one of the only opportunities in the world for early-stage companies in the animal health sector to present their vision, business plan and technology to potential investors.
The selection committee will consider companies that meet the following criteria:
– Seeking $500,000 – $20 million in funding
– Revenue projections of $20 million within 5-7 years

COMPANY NEWS RELEASES
• Elanco Animal Health, together with the COAST Development Group, announced the publication of a proposal for a practical diagnostic aid for canine osteoarthritis, called ‘COAST’ (Canine OsteoArthritis Staging Tool). COAST was developed by a group of nine experts actively working in the fields of small animal orthopedics, anesthesia and pain management to develop a standardized staging system for canine OA. Details of COAST are available as an open access peer-reviewed article published in The Veterinary Journal. (company website)
• BodeVet announced it has partnered with Blue Ridge Veterinary Blood Bank, HemoSolutions, and Northwest Veterinary Blood Bank to support distribution of its first product, StablePlate RX. Billed as the world’s first injectable freeze-dried platelet derived product, StablePlate RX Canine is used to treat acute uncontrolled hemorrhage in bleeding canine patients. • The J.M. Smucker Co. announced a recall of specific lots of two varieties of Milo’s Kitchen dog treats, because the products may contain elevated levels of beef thyroid hormone. The recall was initiated after the FDA informed the company of reports of three pet illnesses. (Foodsafetynews.com)
• Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) and Ethos Veterinary Health have entered into a collaborative relationship that will allow for shared research on educational outcomes, advancing the use of simulations in clinical education, and new ways of incorporating technology into training and continuous development. One component of the relationship consists of Ethos clinicians conducting virtual, case-based rounds with LMU students. (company press release)
• CHINA Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health announced partnerships with Beijing KangMu Omni-Honesty Animal Health Products and China Agricultural Vet Bio Science and Technology to establish a joint venture focused on the development of new foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccines in China. The partnership, named Shaanxi Meili Omni-Honesty Animal Health aims to begin manufacturing FMD vaccines by 2021, and is backed by investment of CNY840 million ($134 million) from the three firms. • CANADA Thompson Street Capital Partners announced that its portfolio company Tropichem Research Labs, LLC has acquired Montreal, Quebec-based TetraGenx, a leading independent animal health contract development and manufacturing organization. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. (company press release)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
• US – BIOTECHNOLOGY REGULATION The USDA reported that it will not offer regulatory oversight for innovative new breeding techniques, which include genome editing. Under its biotechnology regulations, the USDA does not regulate or have any plans to regulate plants that could otherwise have been developed through traditional breeding techniques, as long as they are not plant pests or were developed using plant pests. • UK – VACCINE RESEARCH Researchers at The Pirbright Institute have been able to insert protective avian influenza virus genes into the duck enteritis virus (DEV) vaccine by using a method of CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing that allows higher rates of gene insertion. The development makes the process more efficient, and the resulting vaccine virus is able to protect ducks against both DEV and avian influenza. (Feedstuffs)
• US – VETERINARY GRANT PROGRAM The USDA’s National Institute of Food & Agriculture (NIFA) announced the availability of roughly $2.4 million (pending congressional appropriations) in funding to help assure that rural communities have sufficient access to livestock veterinary services. Funding is made through NIFA’s Veterinary Services Grant Program (VSGP). (Feedstuffs)
• US – DRUG GUIDANCE FDA announced the availability of Draft Guidance for Industry #255 – Elemental Impurities in Animal Drug Products Questions and Answers. This guidance is intended to assist sponsors of animal drug products in addressing changes in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) requirements. The FDA is accepting public comments until May 28, 2018. To electronically submit comments to the docket, visit www.regulations.gov and type FDA-2018-D-0943 in the search box. (FDA)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
The upcoming holiday weekend has probably impacted the number of stories and press releases during the week to report. One story I would like to comment on is the 10th annual meeting of the Kansas City Animal Health Investment Forum. This event has become a must-attend event by most companies in the animal health industry. If your firm is interested in new technologies, this is the place to be on August 21st (which also happens to be my birthday). We’ve enjoyed observing the growth of this event the past 10 years since we first recommended it to the KCAHC board as an industry need. We continue to be impressed with the innovations being created by universities and individual researchers, and in most cases these innovations need funding to reach their full economic impact in a reasonable amount of time. We hope to see many of you in KC on August 21st.
