> Rocky Mountain Natural Meats is recalling about 67,000 pounds of ground and tenderized steak bison products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced. (Meating Place)
> United Pet Group is voluntarily expanding its recent recall of its Pro-Pet Adult Daily Vitamin Supplement tablets for Dogs to include additional pet nutritional supplement products for dogs and cats due to possible Salmonella contamination. (FDA)
> Putney announced that it will supply its Carprofen Caplets to VetCentric. (Company Press Release)
> KMG Chemicals announced that it has signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Solvay Chemicals to distribute the Proxitane AHC product line for animal hygiene in the United States. (Company Press Release)

> EU – AUJESKY’S DISEASE The EU’s Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCOFCAH) agreed to declare Slovenia an Aujesky-free member state, while Poland and Spain were also upgraded to a regime of “special trade rules” aimed at consolidating progress made to date. (Agra Europe)
> JAPAN – FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE Another cow in the city of Miyazaki has displayed symptoms of foot-and-mouth disease. (Meating Place) Miyazaki is a key beef-raising region that often supplies calves to breeders of Kobe beef, Japan’s premium beef market. (Drovers)
> US – BOVINE TUBERCULOSIS A Paulding County, Oho dairy herd has tested positive for bovine tuberculosis. The affected animals were removed from the herd. (Toledo Blade)
> AUSTRALIA – REGULATION The Federal Government has pushed through major reforms to help cut the red tape and wait times holding back registration of agricultural chemicals. The reforms promise to cut to the heart of administrative inefficiencies, and could help reduce registration approval times by up to 30 per cent. But chemical companies believe broader reforms to regulation of agricultural and veterinary chemicals are still needed. (FarmOnline)
> US – MINOR USE MINOR SPECIES The Food and Drug Administration today announced the publication of a Request for Applications for a grant program to support the development of new animal drugs intended for minor species or minor uses in major species. (FDA)
> US – DAIRY HERD RETIREMENT Cooperatives Working Together announced it has tentatively accepted 194 bids for its latest herd retirement, representing 34,442 cows and 653,893,409 pounds of milk. (Meating Place)

This symposium will feature national and regional experts who will speak on the challenges we face to protect the nation’s animal agriculture, food supply and public health against biological threats and diseases.

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
Summertime and the living is…slow. Product recalls and disease monitoring efforts remind us that our ability to detect potential risk may be greater than our ability to assess it. (Our brethren in finance can surely relate.) New product introductions continue in an incremental manner; summertime relegates blockbusters to the movie screen. The regulatory agencies try to ease up, but Industry is certainly not satisfied with the efforts. Maybe it will take cooler temperatures and cooler heads to resolve the industry’s issues.
