• Bayer announced that it plans to invest around EUR 92 million in the next 5 years to develop their production site in Kiel, Germany. The goal is to strengthen the growing business in the companion animal segment. (Pharmabiz)
• Nextmune announced that it has completed the acquisition of the assets of Spectrum group, a leader in the US veterinary allergy market, and formed Spectrum Veterinary, LLC. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Newswire)
• Allflex announced the launch of SenseTime, a new cow monitoring strategy for global dairy herds. SenseTime delivers proven heat detection, health insight and a choice of ear tags or neck tags. According to Allflex, SenseTime is the first cow monitoring system that allows farmers to use either ear tags or neck tags, according to their preference. (Animal Pharm)
• ImproMed announced its name has changed to Henry Schein Veterinary Solutions. Henry Schein, Inc., has owned the company since 2011. (Fond du lac Reporter)
• Banfield Pet Hospital announced the release of its 2017 State of Pet Health Report. The focus of this year’s report was the increase in overweight pets nationwide. According to the data, over the past 10 years, Banfield witnessed a 169% increase in overweight cats and a 158% increase in overweight dogs. (Vet Advantage – company press release)
• Woofables Gourmet Dog Biscuit Bakery announced it has acquired Taxi’s Dog Bakery. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Pet Business)
• Mission Pets announced it has acquired the Harry Barker brand of pet accessories. The move brings sales channel diversification to Mission Pets, allowing the company to expand beyond mass retail into high-end retailers, specialty boutiques, home and gift shops, pet stores and premium online retailers. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Pet Product News)
• AKC Pet Care LLC announced that it has acquired all of SPOT Canine Club’s locations, which are located in the metropolitan New York area. Both AKC Canine Retreat and SPOT Canine Club offer daycare, boarding, training, walking and grooming and bathing services. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Pet Age)
• Petcube announced it has acquired the intellectual property and assets of PetBot, a Canadian startup behind the PetBot “selfie-taking” treat dispensing pet camera. Petcube is about to release its own interactive treat camera, Petcube Bites. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Pet Age)
• INDIA Phibro Animal Health Corporation and Zydus Cadila announced their intention to enter into a long-term arrangement to license Phibro’s poultry vaccine technologies and know-how to a new vaccine manufacturing facility to be built by Zydus Cadila to serve the poultry market in India. • CANADA – REGULATORY FEEDBACK The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has launched a new online tool to gather feedback on the country’s current Canada-US Regulatory Cooperation Council (RCC) work plans from stakeholders in Canada’s food industry – specifically when it comes to food safety, meat inspection and certification, animal health and plant health. • US – AVIAN INFLUENZA RESEARCH A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Georgia has determined that infection with a low-pathogenic influenza virus in mallards gives a good protection against other subtypes of the virus, like a natural vaccination. The study was published in the June edition of PLOS Pathogens. (Feedstuffs)
• JAPAN – BOVINE LEUKOSIS RESEARCH Researchers at Hokkaido University have seen a reduction in bovine leukemia virus after applying doses of specific antibodies such as PD-1 and PD-L1, which appear to break the virus’ normal immunologic function. (Animal Pharm)
• US – OPIOID OVERDOSE TRAINING The University of Illinois, in conjunction with the AVMA and other organizations, has created a comprehensive training video to help veterinarians and law enforcement teams provide potentially life-saving treatment for working dogs who encounter opioids in the line of duty. (Vet Advantage)
• US – ONE HEALTH Kansas State University’s Olathe and Manhattan campuses have combined with the University of Missouri-Kansas City to establish 1Data, a project designed to accelerate breakthroughs in human and animal health. 1Data aggregates an array of pre-clinical human and animal health information into a cohesive, structured and open-source database called the Structured Environment for Animal Data and Simulation. The partnership will establish a new standard for analyzing cross-species health information, while reducing the cost of drug development by bringing the two sectors closer together. (Animal Pharm)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
The pet market is hot with company transactions. There were 5 acquisitions announced in just this newsletter. While many of these companies involved do not fit the normal profile of product lines in animal health, they are successful companies that are finding niches where pet owners are prepared to purchase either their product or service. I found it interesting that the 2017 Banfield State of the Pet Health Report on companion animal obesity is followed by the Woofables Gourmet Dog Biscuit Bakery acquiring the Taxi’s Dog Bakery. It appears there may be an opportunity for a low-calorie dog biscuit!
The other story that caught my eye was the announcement of a new cow monitoring diagnostic product for heat detection that is available in a collar or ear tag. Can you remember when the first plastic ear tags for identification were introduced? Now electronic and/or digital sensors are improving the monitoring of health conditions in all types of animals.
