NEW REPORT COMING IN DECEMBER 2016:
New Strategies for Health and Performance in US Livestock and Poultry Production

This new study from Brakke Consulting examines what changes producers are and will be making due to the loss of shared use antibiotics for growth promotion and the new Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) effective Jan. 1, 2017.  The study examines:
            •   Changes in production systems
            •   New approaches, technologies and products producers are adopting
            •   New feed additives they are considering
            •   Who and what most influence decision-making
            •   Quality of information and support from supplier companies
            •   How producers will measure results of changes

The cost of the study is $16,000; companies that order by Aug. 19 and pay by Sept. 20 earn a 10% early order discount.  In addition, early order subscribers will have an opportunity to review the survey questionnaire in advance.

COMPANY EARNINGS RELEASES

Consolidated revenue in the second quarter amounted to EUR 219 million ($288 million), a 1% decline compared to the same period of last year due to the unfavorable evolution of exchange rates. • Orion Animal Health reported results for the first 6 months of 2016.  Sales were EUR 38 million ($50 million) during the first half of the year, a decline of 13% compared to the comparable prior-year period. • Abaxis, Inc. reported financial results for the first fiscal quarter ended June 30, 2016. Veterinary market revenues were $48 million, up 10% over last year’s comparable quarter. (PRNewswire)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS

• US – AVIAN INFLUENZA  Low pathogenic avian influenza has been detected at live poultry markets in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey, according to the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). Animal health authorities are conducting trace-back and testing at markets that have epidemiologic links to the affected markets. (WattAgNet.com)

• CANADA – CANCER RESEARCH  Scientists at Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph have discovered that injecting a cancer-killing rhabdovirus into the spleens of cats who have developed cancer boosts the animals’ immune response to the disease. Injecting the virus into the spleen led to a rapid proliferation of memory T cells. The research was published in the Journal of Immunology. (Fierce Animal Health)

• US – FELINE HERPESVIRUS RESEARCH  Scientists at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine have developed a model system that can be used to test drugs for treating Feline herpes virus 1 (FHV-1) eye infections.  The model uses feline corneas (donated from cats that died free from eye diseases) that are kept viable in a liquid medium and infected with the virus; antiviral drugs are then applied to the infected cornea.  Early results with three antiviral drugs have proven promising. The work is reported in the Journal of General Virology.  (Eurekalert.org)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT

Earlier in the newsletter we hope you noted Brakke’s new multi-client study, “New Strategies for Health and Performance in US Livestock and Poultry Production.” As you are well aware, livestock and poultry producers face changes effective January 1, 2017 with the new Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) and subsequent loss of shared use antibiotics for growth promotion. Indeed, some producers are already exploring antibiotic-free production in response to consumer demand.

While articles discussing these changes have proliferated, to date there hasn’t been much in the way of in-depth examination of how producers will respond to these new challenges. A better understanding of these dynamics will be critical to your firm as you plan your marketing and business plans for 2017 and beyond, and our report intends to offer insights to help you accomplish this.  If you or others in your company have questions related to this new study, feel free to call or email our Dallas office for additional information.

Have a great weekend! Stay cool!

Ron Brakke
