COMPANY EARNINGS RELEASES
• Virbac reported results for the second quarter of 2016. Consolidated revenue in the second quarter amounted to EUR 219 million ($288 million), a 1% decline compared to the same period of last year due to the unfavorable evolution of exchange rates. At constant parities, the growth for the quarter reached +4%. (company website)
• Neogen Corporation reported results for its 2016 fiscal year, which ended May 31. Revenues for fiscal 2016 increased 13% to $321 million. Net income increased 9% to $36.6 million. Animal Safety revenues for fiscal 2016 increased 15% to $175 million. (company press release)
• Orion Animal Health reported results for the first 6 months of 2016. Sales were EUR 38 million ($50 million) during the first half of the year, a decline of 13% compared to the comparable prior-year period. The decline was largely caused by a milestone payment recorded on the sale of product rights in fiscal 2015. (Animal Pharm)
• Abaxis, Inc. reported financial results for the first fiscal quarter ended June 30, 2016. Veterinary market revenues were $48 million, up 10% over last year’s comparable quarter. (PRNewswire)

COMPANY NEWS RELEASES
• Merck Animal Health announced the FDA’s approval of Bravecto (fluralaner topical solution) topical flea and tick treatment for use on both dogs and cats. Like the previously approved Bravecto chewable tablet, Bravecto topical solution provides 12 weeks of protection from a single dose. (Business Wire)
• Compassion-First Pet Hospitals announced the addition of 10 new hospitals to its growing family of veterinary hospitals. Representing Colorado, Connecticut, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas, these hospitals represent Compassion-First Pet Hospitals’ first expansion outside of the Northeast and an increased presence in Pennsylvania. • EU Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health and Spanish company CZ Veterinaria announced a collaboration to market CZ Veterinaria’s Entericolix vaccine, which has received marketing authorization in Europe. Entericolix, a sow vaccine, provides 21-day duration of immunity against diarrhea in piglets caused by E. coli and C. perfringens Type C. (Animal Pharm)
• EU Ceva Santé Animale announced it has stopped sales of Velactis (cabergoline) across Europe after European Medicine Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Veterinary Use (CVMP) received reports of adverse events in 319 dairy cows that had been treated with the product, including 71 deaths. Velactis is used to reduce milk production in dairy cows at the time of drying off. The product was authorized in the EU last year and launched in February 2016. (Animal Pharm)
• EU PetPace announced it has successfully completed the EU’s certification and safety requirements for its smart collar for dogs and cats, designed for the remote continuous monitoring and analysis of pets’ vital signs and activity. Already available in the US, Canada and UK, the PetPace collar is now available in all EU member countries and will be distributed by Ecopet Systems. (Animal Pharm)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
• US – AVIAN INFLUENZA Low pathogenic avian influenza has been detected at live poultry markets in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey, according to the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). Animal health authorities are conducting trace-back and testing at markets that have epidemiologic links to the affected markets. (WattAgNet.com)
• CANADA – CANCER RESEARCH Scientists at Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph have discovered that injecting a cancer-killing rhabdovirus into the spleens of cats who have developed cancer boosts the animals’ immune response to the disease. Injecting the virus into the spleen led to a rapid proliferation of memory T cells. The research was published in the Journal of Immunology. (Fierce Animal Health)
• US – FELINE HERPESVIRUS RESEARCH Scientists at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine have developed a model system that can be used to test drugs for treating Feline herpes virus 1 (FHV-1) eye infections. The model uses feline corneas (donated from cats that died free from eye diseases) that are kept viable in a liquid medium and infected with the virus; antiviral drugs are then applied to the infected cornea. Early results with three antiviral drugs have proven promising. The work is reported in the Journal of General Virology. (Eurekalert.org)
