COMPANY EARNINGS RELEASES
> Phibro Animal Health Corporation announced its financial results for its fiscal year ended June 30, 2015. Net sales for the year were $749 million, an increase of 8% over the prior year. Animal Health sales for the year were $471 million, an increase of 9% over the prior year. Adjusted EBITDA was $110 million, an increase of 21%. (company press release)
> Dechra announced preliminary results for the full year ended June 30, 2015. Revenues for the year were GBP 204 million ($320 million), a 5% increase compared to the prior year (+10% at constant exchange rate). Underlying EBITDA for the year was GBP 48 million ($75 million), an increase of 4% (+10% at constant exchange rate). (company website)

COMPANY NEWS RELEASES
> Merial announced the global launch of Avinew NeO, an effervescent tablet vaccine for the prevention of Newcastle disease virus in poultry. The firm’s Avinew NeO tablet contains the same active ingredients as its Avinew vaccine. The tablets will be packaged in lightweight aluminum blisters and dissolved in drinking water. (Animal Pharm)
> Dechra Veterinary Products announced that FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine approved an additional 5 mg strength of Vetoryl Capsules (trilostane) to treat smaller patients and help alleviate the need to have smaller doses of trilostane compounded. (company press release)
> Kinetic Vet announced the launch of Compass, a 10 ml sterile solution which contains both 50 mg Sodium Hyaluronate and 500 mg of PSGAG. Compass is intended for use by veterinary surgeons to normalize joint fluid following arthrotomy. (company press release)
> ANIMART LLC announced the acquisition of Pennsylvania-based Animal Medic Inc., a leading supplier of dairy health supplies in the northeastern US. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Feedstuffs)
> Ralco announced that it has launched its Strong Animals brand of animal health products for the dairy industry. The brand provides innovative products to reduce production stress through its Start Strong, Fight Strong and Stay Strong product lines. (company press release)
> Perdue announced that it is acquiring Natural Food Holdings, including the well-known Niman Ranch brand, from LNK Partners. Niman Ranch includes more than 700 independent family farmers and ranchers whose animals are raised to high welfare standards and without any antibiotics. Perdue also acquired the Prairie Grove brand and the SiouxPreme Packing plants in the transaction. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Feedstuffs)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
> EU – CLONING The European Parliament has adopted an uncompromising position on animal cloning, despite the European Commission arguing such a ban would likely be unworkable. The report calls for a series of amendments which would make it illegal to import meat and dairy products – along with breeding material and live animals – into the EU unless the import certificate shows they are not from clones or their descendants. Parliament also extended the ban’s scope to cover all species of animals kept and reproduced for farming purposes. (Animal Pharm)
> WORLD – EPILEPSY The International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force (IVETF) has produced unified and standardized guidelines for the research, diagnosis and treatment of canine and feline epilepsy in veterinary medicine. The IVETF is based in London at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). (Animal Pharm)
> US – ANIMAL WELFARE McDonald’s announced that it will fully transition to cage-free eggs for its nearly 16,000 restaurants in the U.S. and Canada over the next 10 years in order to meet consumers’ changing expectations and preferences. McDonald’s USA purchases approximately two billion eggs and McDonald’s Canada purchases 120 million eggs each year. McDonald’s USA was the first food service company to adopt a standard for hen housing systems, which provided more space per bird than the industry standard. (Feedstuffs)
> US – REALITY TV Students from Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine will be featured in a new Nat Geo WILD TV show that will premiere next month. The show, called Vet School, will follow first-year and fourth-year veterinary students at the veterinary college as they perform daily tasks such as draw blood, handle “life-and-death surgeries and emergencies” and deal with the stress of “life as an aspiring veterinarian.” The show was filmed during the past academic year. BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
Although the news cycle is quiet this week, the merger & acquisition activity continues. Perdue’s purchase of Natural Food Holdings and McDonald’s announcement that they are transitioning to cage-free eggs highlight the growing movement to accommodate consumers’ opinions about how the animals in the food chain are treated. If you’re in the food animal business, you’d be well-advised to keep animal welfare and antibiotic use in mind as you plan for the coming years.
If you’re looking for something to watch on TV, why not give Nat Geo WILD’s “Vet School” a try. It will be a trip down memory lane for me and other veterinarians, and all you non-veterinarians are sure to be entertained; you might even learn something!
Today marks the 14th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. As Americans reflect on the anniversary, it strikes me how divided our country seems to be these days. Let’s all take this day to remember the national pride and the universal support for one another that followed the events of 9-11. A little empathy and kindness goes a long way.
