CANINE COGNITION AND AGING CONFERENCE

CanCog Technologies will hold this year’s Canine Cognition and Aging Conference on June 15-17 at the Queen’s Landing hotel in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario.

> Zoetis announced the availability of Aureomix S (chlortetracycline/sulfamethazine) medicated feed additive. Aureomix S replaces Aureo S-P 250 and Aureomix Granular 500, the chlortetracycline/ sulfamethazine/ penicillin combinations that Zoetis voluntarily withdrew last year. Aureomix S is indicated for treatment of bacterial swine enteritis and cervical abscesses during times of stress. (company press release)
> Bimeda announced the introduction of LevaMed (levamisole hydrochloride) Soluble Pig Wormer, a broad spectrum anthelmintic for oral use in swine that is effective against a variety of nematodes. (company press release)
> Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences, Inc. introduced Marin Plus for dogs, a new liver health supplement that combines classic Marin for dogs (silybin A+B (derived from milk thistle), vitamin E, and zinc) with NMXCC95 curcumin extract and medium chain triglyceride (MCT) oil. This enhanced formulation is now available in a soft chew form for convenient administration. (company press release)
> The FDA announced that Nexcyon Pharmaceuticals, Inc. was awarded Minor Use Minor Species (MUMS) designation for its ACTH 1-24 (Adrenocorticotropic hormone) injectable for use as a diagnostic aid in testing for adrenal insufficiency in dogs. (FDA)
> Adisseo and Novozymes announced partnership to develop and market a probiotic for poultry. Novozymes will be responsible for in vitro screening, development and production, while Adisseo will manage in vivo testing, marketing and sales. The partners expect to launch the product within the next 12 months. (Feedstuffs)
> Walmart announced it has asked its suppliers to use antibiotics only for disease prevention and treatment, not for fattening up animals, and to eliminate constrained housing such as pig gestation crates. Walmart is also asking farmers not to perform painful procedures such as de-horning without painkillers. Walmart has also requested that its meat and egg producers report antibiotic use annually and post the data online, and to report incidents of animal abuse and take disciplinary actions against perpetrators. Walmart said the move was partly in response to shopper demands. (FierceAnimalHealth – AP)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
> US – AVIAN INFLUENZA VACCINE Researchers at Kansas State University and the DHS’s Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases have created a recombinant virus that can be used in vaccines to fight H5N1 and H7N9 strains. A strain of the Newcastle disease virus was cloned, then a small section of the H5N1 virus was transplanted into the Newcastle disease virus vaccine. Tests showed that the recombinant virus protected chickens against both Newcastle disease virus and H5N1. A similar experiment was successful with the H7N9 virus. (Agriview.com)
> US – CWD The Michigan Department of Resources confirmed the state’s first case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in a free-ranging white-tailed deer. The positive test prompted the initiation of an emergency response plan to deal with the disease, including establishment of a Core CWD Area and a CWD Management Zone. ( @AVMAVets – mlive.com)
> RUSSIA – TRADE RESTRICTIONS Russia has announced new restrictions banning all live poultry and hatching eggs from the US (apart those coming from specific pathogen free (SPF) flocks), where avian influenza has now affected more than 40 million birds. Most other poultry products – including chicken and turkey meat – are already banned by Russia as part of a wider embargo on Western food products imposed in August last year. (Animal Pharm)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
The limited news this holiday-shortened week nevertheless reinforces some themes we have seen in the recent past: generics, nutraceuticals, probiotics for livestock, and animal welfare. It may be an open question as to whether these things can provide the efficacy and profitability that have built the gigantic leaders in animal health. But the current direction appears clear. As Bob Dylan sang: “you don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.”
At the same time, the industry is faced with a major problem in avian influenza and is experimenting with new techniques to develop vaccines for an answer. The one common theme is time; everything identified here is being implemented on short time schedules. In animal health, as elsewhere, life is speeding up.
