ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS

> CANADA – PEDV  Canada has discovered its first two cases of the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv). The Ontario government is investigating a hog farm in the province’s Middlesex County after a laboratory finding of the virus. (Veterinary Advantage)

> US – PEDV DIAGNOSTICS  The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine announced that it has developed a second diagnostic test for porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). The new test can detect evidence of the virus and can also identify which pigs have been exposed to PEDV, even if animals have not shown symptoms of the disease. (Feedstuffs)

> US – FELINE VIRUSES  Researchers at Colorado State University have discovered a family of cancer-causing viruses in several US populations of bobcats, mountain lions and domestic cats, raising questions about whether the previously undetected viruses might be the root cause of some cancers found in housecats. The newly identified viruses are in the same family of gammaherpesviruses that can cause lymphoma and Kaposi’s sarcoma in people, especially those with HIV-AIDS and other immune-suppressing conditions. The research findings were published in the online version of the Journal of Virology. (Veterinary Medicine Executive Briefing – Medicalnewstoday.com)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT

This week’s newsletter has some of the first companies’ financial reports for 2013. Those reporting had reasonably nice increases compared to 2012. We expect that some additional company reports in the next few weeks will not be as positive.

Based on our early projections for the leading companies we believe the total worldwide market grew about 2.5% in 2013. If we find our projected number to be reasonably accurate it would indicate that unit volume was flat or declined except for some areas where generic products gained market share at lower prices. In the US the sluggishness companion animal revenue reflects a growing concern in consumers minds regarding value.

We will discuss a number of our observations regarding the animal health market 2013 results in more detail, as well as expectations for 2014, in our Annual Industry Overview that is mentioned earlier in this newsletter.

Have a great weekend!!
