COMPANY EARNINGS RELEASES
> Neogen Corporation announced results for the first quarter of its 2016 fiscal year ended Aug. 31. Revenues were $75 million, an 11% increase compared to the first quarter of last year. First quarter net income increased 5% to $9.3 million. Animal Safety revenues increased 10% to $40.4 million. (company press release)

COMPANY NEWS RELEASES
> Bayer Animal Health announced the approval of Claro (florfenicol, terbinafine, mometasone furoate) Otic Solution, the first single-dose therapy to treat susceptible strains of common pathogens found in canine otitis externa. The product is expected to be available for sale exclusively to veterinarians in November. (company press release)
> Harrisvaccines announced that the USDA has issued a conditional license to continue the development of the company’s H5N2 avian influenza vaccine. The vaccine has not been approved for use against avian influenza. The company is on standby should the USDA give the green-light to begin manufacturing the vaccine. (Feedstuffs)
> PetSmart Inc. is reportedly exploring the possibility of acquiring Petco Holdings Inc. The two companies explored a merger possibility in 2014, but PetSmart ruled out a deal with Petco in 2014 in favor of a buyout by private equity consortium led by BC Partners Ltd. for US$8.7 billion. If PetSmart and Petco merged, the new company would account for 30% of US pet specialty supplies stores, and 20% of all pet product sales in the US, according to reports. (PetFoodIndustry.com)
> MWI announced that effective October 1, the company’s name will change from MWI Veterinary Supply to MWI Animal Health. MWI will also debut a new logo. (company press release)
> Tomlyn announced the launch of Pre & Probiotic supplements for cats, which support balanced microbial flora and intestinal health with more than 4 billion CFUs of probiotics in each packet. The Pre & Probiotic supplement is also available for dogs with a higher level of probiotics. (Pet Business)
> BioZyme announced the launch of a new Commercial Division focused on research and development of products for commercial swine and poultry operations. BioZyme has already completed several research studies and recently launched its first new product, Liquid Boost CML – a natural, nutrient-rich liquid supplement for pigs, poultry and feed yard receiving cattle. > Gour Medical SA announced the signing of an exclusive development and supply agreement with Solmic Research GmbH. Gour will exclusively commercialize ultrapure Cannabidiol products from Solmic for the animal healthcare worldwide. Financial terms were not disclosed. (company press release)
> Cook Animal Health, a Cook Medical affiliate, announced a distribution agreement with MILA International, Inc. This agreement, effective immediately, will enable MILA to offer over 100 Cook Medical minimally invasive devices for sale to veterinary clinics and veterinary schools in the US. (Business wire)
> MedVet Medical & Cancer Centers for Pets has acquired three veterinary practices in the past four weeks. The acquisitions bring the company to 11 sites in five states. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Bizjournals.com/columbus)
> EU Zoetis announced that the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Veterinary Use (CVMP) adopted a positive opinion for its initial marketing authorization application for Simparica (sarolaner) for the oral treatment of flea, tick and sarcoptic mange infestations in dogs. (Animal Pharm)
> EU MSD Animal Health (known as Merck Animal Health in the USA and Canada) announced the launch of Innovax-ILT, the company’s novel vaccine that, in a single shot, protects poultry against infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) as well as Marek’s disease for use in the European Union. Innovax-ILT is the first and only vector vaccine available in the EU to protect against infectious laryngotracheitis. (ThePoultrySite.com)
> EU Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health announced it is launching two new swine vaccines against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) in Europe. Ingelvac PRRSFLEX EU for piglets and ReproCyc PRRS EU for breeding gilts and sows will be launched in most European countries in October 2015. (Animal Pharm)
> EU Ceva announced the launch of its swine respiratory vaccine Hyogen in Europe. The vaccine protects against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae using a unique field-relevant strain and novel adjuvant. (Animal Pharm)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
> SLOVENIA – BSE A case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy has been found in a deceased twelve year old cow in Slovenia. The animal was from a holding at Adlesici, Novo Mesto, close to the Croatian border in the south of the country. The outbreak pertains to a small “cohort” of four cattle, three of which were slaughtered in 2005 and 2012 and one animal still alive and kept in another holding. (TheCattleSite)
> US – CATTLE PARASITE RESISTANCE The FDA is initiating a survey of veterinarians to gauge awareness of drug resistance among internal parasites of cattle, and compile data on prevalence of resistance and strategies veterinarians are using to detect and manage against resistance development. The survey will take place between Sept. 29 and Nov. 3, 2015. (Vet Advantage)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
This week new product approvals and/or launches were announced by a number of companies. There are advances being made in a number of food animal vaccines to replace or enhance the current products in the marketplace. We continue to believe that improved and new vaccines will play an ever-increasing role in preventive medicine in both food and companion animals.
We also noted this week that a new oral flea, tick and sarcoptic mange product for dogs was approved in Europe. This product, when launched, should provide a new alternative for veterinarians and pet owners in an already crowded marketplace. One would assume that the US approval for this product is probably on the near-term horizon. Another new product in this category by a leading company will likely lead to an even more competitive environment in 2016.
We are now only a few days away from closing the books on the third quarter of 2015. The first 9 months of a year normally establishes fairly closely the results for the full year, so we look forward to having these results in the coming weeks to measure against 2014.
