COMPANY EARNINGS RELEASES
> Bayer reported financial results for the full year 2012. Animal Health sales were EUR 1.30 billion ($1.70 billion), a 10% increase compared to 2011 (4% after currency & portfolio adjustments). (company website)
> Dechra reported results for the half-year ended December 31, 2012. Group revenue was GBP 252 million ($381 million), an increase of 20% compared to the comparable period in the prior year. Pharmaceuticals revenue was GBP 98 million ($148 million), an increase of 69%. Operating profit was GBP 15.1 million ($22.8 million), an increase of 37%. The company’s results benefitted from the 2012 acquisition of Eurovet. (company website)
> Heska announced financial results for the year 2012. Total revenue was $73 million, an increase of 4% compared to the prior year. Net income was $1.2 million compared to $2.1 million the prior year, a decline of 43%. (company press release)
> Bioveta, the Czech Republic-based manufacturer of veterinary medicines, reported preliminary estimates for its 2012 financial performance. Preliminary revenues were CZK770 million ($40.5 million), a year-on-year sales increase of nearly 8%. (Animal Pharm)

> Heska Corporation announced the acquisition of 54.6% of Cuattro Veterinary USA, LLC, which markets digital radiography, cloud-based PACS, ultrasound and imaging services suites in veterinary medicine. Heska paid approximately $7.65 million in cash and stock for its interest in Cuattro Vet, including slightly more than $4 million in cash. The remaining minority position (45.4%) in Cuattro Vet is subject to purchase by Heska under performance-based puts and calls following calendar year 2015, 2016 and 2017. (DailyMarkets.com)
> Pet King Brands announced the launch of Zymox Brushless Enzymatic Oral Care Therapy. The products inhibit odor-causing bacteria and destroy plaque biofilm to restore oral balance. (Pet Business)
> Biolase, Inc. announced that it launched the Epic V-Series veterinary soft-tissue diode laser. The Epic V-Series can be used for a wide range of veterinary applications, including surgical, dental, and pain therapy procedures. (Marketwire.com)
> Hy-Vee Inc. issued a voluntary recall of certain bags of Hy-Vee dog food due to elevated levels of aflatoxin, a chemical contaminant commonly found in corn. Routine random tests conducted by the Iowa Department of Agriculture indicated higher-than-normal levels of aflatoxin in some samples of Hy-Vee dog food produced at a Kansas City plant operated by Pro-Pet LLC. > Kasel Associated Industries announced a recall of all products manufactured at its Denver, Colorado, USA, facility from April 20, 2012, through September 19, 2012, due to possible Salmonella contamination. Recalled dog treat brands include: Boots & Barkley, BIXBI, Nature’s Deli, Colorado Naturals, Petco and Best Bully Stick items. (Petfood Industry)
> ProbioticSmart, LLC announced it has acquired the American Livestock and Pet Supply catalog business from Animal Health International, Inc. Financial terms were not disclosed. (company press release)
> LifeLearn Inc. announced the publication of The ABCDs of Small Animal Cardiology. The manual includes a review of current literature as well as the authors’ opinions concerning medical best practices for feline and canine cardiology. (company press release)

ANIMAL HEALTH NEWS
> US – VETERINARY EDUCATION University of Arizona officials are asking the State Legislature for a $250,000 state appropriation for an initial study to evaluate establishing a veterinary medical program. Arizona currently has no veterinary medicine school, but the state subsidizes some students who attend Colorado State University. The current proposal is based on a model in which students would meet clinical requirements at private veterinary centers and clinics. (AZCentral.com)
> US – WILD HORSE CONTRACEPTIVE The EPA has granted regulatory approval for the use of the GonaCon vaccine in adult female wild horses and burros. GonaCon is designed to stimulate the production of antibodies that bind to the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in an animal’s body, reducing the ability to stimulate the release of sex hormones. This results in decreased sexual activity. The vaccine was developed by USDA’s Wildlife Services’ National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) scientists; the product was approved in 2009 for use in female white-tailed deer. (Animal Pharm)

BRAKKE CONSULTING VIEWPOINT
Even in the face of last week’s story in the New York Times on the issue of veterinary student debt, the University of Arizona is planning to move forward with a study evaluating whether or not it makes sense for Arizona to open a new veterinary school. Hopefully, this study will involve a firm or group that understands the current economics of veterinary practice.
Two additional stories that caught my eye this week was the recalls of contaminated pet food and treats. These continuing recalls do not build confidence in the minds of consumers regarding the quality of these product categories.
The best news this week was the new moisture that arrived in the form of snow that covered a large portion of the beef growing area in the US.
