COMPANY NEWS RELEASES
> Crucell N.V. announced that it has signed a second PER.C6 research license agreement with Merial. The non-exclusive agreement allows Merial to use the PER.C6 cell line for the development of gene therapy in a specific field of companion animal medicine and includes an option for a commercial license agreement. The new agreement follows the October 2004 licensing deal which allows Merial to utilize PER.C6 for the development and commercialization of veterinary vaccines for foot-and-mouth disease. Financial details were not disclosed. (Faz.net)
> Merial announced an agreement with Avidis (of France) giving Merial the right to use Avidis’ aXent technology to develop adjuvant-free recombinant vaccines for two unspecified diseases. The agreement includes the possibility of acquiring exclusive rights through further license agreements. Financial terms were not disclosed. (Animal Pharm)
> The FDA amended the animal drug regulations to reflect approval of a new animal drug application (NADA) filed by Fort Dodge Animal Health. The NADA provides for oral use of moxidectin solution in sheep for the treatment and control of a variety of internal parasites. (AnimalNet – Federal Register)
> The FDA amended the animal drug regulations to reflect approval of an abbreviated new animal drug application (ANADA) filed by First Priority, Inc. The ANADA provides for oral use of furosemide syrup for the treatment of edema in dogs. (AnimalNet – Federal Register)
> Evialis announced it has signed a technology partnership agreement with Nosan Corporation of Japan relating primarily to alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters and animal feed with a low environmental impact. A separate announcement by Evialis announced the acquisition of Monti Foods of Eastern Cape, South Africa, manufacturer of 30,000 tons of compound feeds per year. Those activities are being combined with that of South African piglet feed/premixes producer Coprex, bought by Evialis in 2001. (Pig International)
> Kraft Foods announced that its Milk-Bone dog biscuits brand is for sale. The company has reportedly hired JP Morgan Chase & Co to sell the business. (Pet Food Industry)

> CHINA – LIVE AVIAN INFLUENZA VACCINE
China reported that its scientists have produced the world’s first live vaccine against avian influenza and Newcastle disease, both affecting poultry. The vaccine was developed by the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute after four years of research. In addition to injection, the vaccine can be administered orally, nasally or by spraying. (UPI)
> ROMANIA – AVIAN INFLUENZA A village in southeastern Romania was quarantined on after five chickens tested positive for an H5 variant of avian influenza. The virus was first detected in quick tests in Albesti, 100km east of Bucharest, a sign that the virus was turning up west of the Danube Delta, where the H5N1 strain of the virus was first confirmed in October. The H5 virus was also confirmed in the nearby village of Stelnica. (News24.com)
> TURKEY – AVIAN INFLUENZA Turkey reported an outbreak of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza in an area 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Iran. About 1,200 chickens, geese, turkeys and ducks kept in four backyards in the village of Kopruler in Igdir province died from the virus. Igdir is along a main flyway used by migratory birds in the Anatolia region of eastern Turkey. (Bloomberg)
> EU – NEW FEED RULES On January 1, 2006, the European Union (EU) will adopt a large updated body of food and feed legislation. The Food “Hygiene Package,” the regulation on microbiological criteria for foodstuffs, the regulation on official feed and food controls, and the Feed Hygiene Regulation, constitute a complementary set of rules to tighten and harmonize EU food safety measures. > US – IDAHO BRUCELLOSIS STATUS The Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) has learned that Idaho will likely be designated a brucellosis “Class A” state by the USDA, a reduction from the “brucellosis-free” status the state has held since 1991. The designation change follows the October discovery of brucellosis in a Swan Valley, Idaho, cattle herd. The reduction in status will likely occur in early January 2006. (Feedstuffs online)
