It turns out that in the study the WSJ refers to, there were efficiency benefits due to the use of AI, however the capacity it frees up gets repurposed into activities like email, messages, chat apps, and business-related software. It does not go to focused, uninterrupted work, such as figuring out complex problems, creating and strategizing. And it does not go to having more free time – in fact, the study showed that people worked at faster paces, took on broader tasks and ended up working longer hours. The authors cautioned that this could lead to cognitive overload and burnout.

The study indicated that while 80% of employees use AI tools at work now, most employees spend only 1% of their total work hours using it. About 3% of workers used AI tools, 7% to 10% of the time, and these workers show the greatest increases in productivity. These early adopters will eventually help companies figure out how best to use AI tools – just ask them before they burnout.

您的观点

Last week we asked you about the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and your bracket-completion strategy. About 40% of respondents don’t follow the March Madness tournament, while 30% seemed to just pick the likely winners. Over 17% of respondents focused on potential upsets, 5% said they were contrarians and picked against the favorites, and 5% said they used AI. Wonder if AI picks likely upsets…maybe a lucky reader will let me know.

This week let’s stay on the AI topic and how its use affects your level of efficiency at work. Which statement best describes your view on the use of AI in your job today?
