Reflecting on Risk<\/strong><\/p>\n

Understanding and coping with risk starts early in our lives from the first time we ride a bicycle without training wheels, to building up the nerve to ask that girl out. The multitude of early life experiences frames how we process and deal with risk when we enter the business world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When it comes to risk management in business, it is interesting to see how it plays out in the day-to-day operations. \u2018Risk is the seed of change\u2019 Can you imagine the \u2018hand ringing\u2019 in Zoetis years ago investing in a new technology called \u2018biological therapeutic agents\u2019, an unknown in veterinary medicine at that time? Now we have multi-billion-dollar markets as a result! What a risky move, one might say\u2026<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In companies that have a high-risk tolerance, chances are if the business case is sound, and the risks are identified clearly and well thought out, risk is rewarded by backing the play. These companies have some catastrophic failures but also game-changing successes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In low-risk tolerant companies, you go through multiple reviews and presentations, and the audience stares at each other until a \u2018consensus\u2019 is formed. Or they wait till the CEO gives a thumbs up or thumbs down. And some of those companies may eventually disappear.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In my view, those companies that embrace a high-risk tolerance with a robust discipline around the management of risk are the ones that are the most successful and the most sustainable. How is it in your company?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Voc\u00ea consegue imaginar a incerteza na Zoetis anos atr\u00e1s ao investir em uma nova tecnologia chamada "agentes terap\u00eauticos biol\u00f3gicos", algo desconhecido na medicina veterin\u00e1ria naquela \u00e9poca? Agora temos mercados multibilion\u00e1rios como resultado! Que jogada arriscada, algu\u00e9m poderia dizer... Em empresas com alta toler\u00e2ncia ao risco, se o plano de neg\u00f3cios for s\u00f3lido e os riscos forem identificados de forma clara e bem ponderada, \u00e9 prov\u00e1vel que o risco seja recompensado ao apostar na estrat\u00e9gia. Essas empresas t\u00eam alguns fracassos catastr\u00f3ficos, mas tamb\u00e9m sucessos transformadores. Em empresas com baixa toler\u00e2ncia ao risco, voc\u00ea passa por v\u00e1rias revis\u00f5es e apresenta\u00e7\u00f5es, e a plateia fica se entreolhando at\u00e9 que um "consenso" seja formado. Ou esperam at\u00e9 que o CEO d\u00ea um sinal de positivo ou negativo. E algumas dessas empresas podem acabar desaparecendo. Na minha opini\u00e3o, as empresas que adotam uma alta toler\u00e2ncia ao risco...<\/p>\n
