• DS Pharma Animal Health reported results for the first half of fiscal 2018 ended September 30, 2018. Sales were JPY 6.48 billion ($57.2 million), an increase of 2.5% compared to the comparable prior-year period. (Animal Pharm)
• Patterson Companies, Inc. reported financial results for its fiscal second quarter ended October 27, 2018. Reported net sales in the Animal Health segment were $855 million, an increase of 4% compared to the same quarter last year. (company press release)

• The FDA announced that its Center for Veterinary Medicine has approved Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica’s Pexion (imepitoin tablets) to treat noise aversion in dogs. Pexion is administered to the dog twice daily starting two days before an expected noise event and continued through the event. (FDA)
• Heska Corporation announced that its Heska Imaging, LLC subsidiary reached an agreement with Cuattro, LLC to purchase certain software and related assets and to terminate the related license and supply agreements between Heska Imaging and Cuattro. The related license and supply agreements were originally agreed to as part of the Company’s 2013 acquisition of a majority interest in Cuattro Veterinary USA, LLC, a predecessor entity to Heska Imaging. • ECO Animal Health Ltd announced that it has entered a development and licensing deal with Agrinnovation and Yissum Research Development Company of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Ltd., State of Israel. The deal allows ECO to license patented research-related innovations leading to the development of a unique long-acting injectable florfenicol product to treat swine bacterial respiratory disease with a single dose. • Nestlé Purina PetCare announced the launch of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Supplements Calming Care, a nutritional supplement formulated to support dogs suffering from fear or anxiety. Calming Care contains the probiotic strain Bifidobacterium longum (BL999), which studies have shown helps dogs maintain calm behavior. The product is designed to be sprinkled over dog food once a day. (Todays Veterinary Business)
• Micronutrients USA and Kemin Industries announced the launch of IntelliBond Vital 5 Cr, a nutrition package containing six essential trace minerals to support dairy and beef cattle well-being and performance. (Feedstuffs)
• Arbor Investments announced that it has completed the acquisition of the Exclusive Brands business unit from Mars Petcare US Inc. and has re-launched the business as Red Collar Pet Foods. The business unit manufactures private-label pet food and treat products for various national retail customers. (Feedstuffs)
• A number of dog food manufacturers are working with the FDA to voluntarily recall selected lots of their producers due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D. Manufacturers affected include Lidl (Orlando brand), Natural Life Pet Products, Sunshine Mills, Inc. (Evolve, Sportsman’s Pride, and Triumph brands), ANF, Inc., and ELM Pet Foods, Inc. (krem.com)
• Antelliq’s Sure Petcare branch announced the launch of Amino, an activity and behavior monitor that learns and interprets the conduct and movement patterns of dogs. The monitor attaches to a dog’s collar and connects to the Amino app via Bluetooth Low Energy. (Animal Pharm)
• Evonik and Vland announced that the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a strategic cooperation in the fields of probiotics for animal nutrition and enzymes for industrial applications. (Feedstuffs)
• Agrivida announced a partnership with Kerry Animal Health & Nutrition to commercialize its Grainzyme phytase feed additive for poultry. Grainzyme technology takes the enzymes and grows them inside a kernel of corn, requiring no fermentation and representing a low-cost shift in the way livestock feed is produced. (Animal Pharm)
• Sanderson Farms Inc. announced that it will discontinue by March 1, 2019 using antibiotics gentamicin and virginiamycin considered medically important for humans for disease prevention in its live poultry operations. (Feedstuffs)
• ISRAEL Phibro Animal Health Corporation announced it has acquired the assets of KoVax Ltd., an Israel-based developer and manufacturer of vaccines for the global aquaculture market. The acquisition strengthens Phibro’s position in fish vaccine innovation and expands its portfolio of aquaculture products. Financial terms were not disclosed. (company press release)
• EU Amazon announced it has launched a private label pet food brand in Europe. The brand, Lifelong Complete, is Amazon’s first foray into the private label pet food market in Europe. Along with the European release of Lifelong Complete, Amazon’s private label dog food Solimo is now available in the United Kingdom; Solimo was previously only available in the US. • UK Pets at Home announced plans to buy out 55 joint venture vet practices from its 471-strong Vet Group chain, with 25 of them becoming Pets at Home-managed practices while the remainder are placed under review. The plan was announced as the retailer reported a 80.5% drop in pre-tax profits to GBP 8 million in an interim report covering the half-year period ending October 11. Pets at Home attributed the profit crash to costs of GBP 29 million relating to the vet practice plans. (GlobalPets)
• CHINA Apiam Animal Health announced a partnership with private Chinese investment firm Gansu Charming Sheep Breeder Company to develop new sheep breeds to boost meat production in China. The program will involve crossbreeding four high-performance Australian sheep breeds with the Hu and Tan breeds native to Mongolia and China. (Weekly Times)
• UK Simplyhealth and Felcana announced a collaboration as strategic partners. Simplyhealth’s expertise in preventive health plans will support the efforts of Felcana’s team of veterinary surgeons, data scientists and engineers, with a view to understanding how pet health plans can support the development of its state-of- the-art digital platforms and technologies. • US – ANTHELMINTIC RESISTANCE The FDA announced that it has requested that animal drug companies voluntarily revise the labels of drugs intended to treat certain internal parasites in livestock and horses to add information about antiparasitic resistance. The requested labeling changes specifically affect anthelmintics for livestock (cattle, sheep, goats, poultry, and swine) and horses. The FDA is requesting that drug companies add information about antiparasitic resistance to both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription dewormers within the next 12 months. (FDA)
• US – CANINE HEART DISEASE Morris Animal Foundation-funded researchers have developed a new treatment for dogs with a rare, but life-threatening, arrhythmia caused by atrioventricular accessory pathways (APs). The minimally invasive technique, radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA), is modified from a human cardiology procedure and has a more than 95% success rate in treating dogs with this type of arrhythmia. Findings were published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine. (Vet Advantage)
• UK – CATTLE GENETICS Scientists at the UK’s University of Kent have applied a new way to screen the genetics of cattle embryos. The technique of ‘Karyomapping’ was initially designed to detect and screen for single-gene and chromosome disorders concurrently in human IVF embryos. Screening at the embryo stage rather than at birth will enable decisions on the best quality genetic stock to be made earlier in the pregnancy. (Animal Pharm)

I’m assuming that I’m not the only one who is starting to realize that 2018 is rapidly coming to a close. It appears to us that 2018 is going to be a very nice growth year for the industry unless there are some big surprises in the 4th quarter numbers.
This growth is particularly rewarding when one considers that the industry has faced a number of issues including a very slow start to the flea/tick/heartworm business because of weather in the Northeastern US to start the year. Also, all the noise related to new tariffs and trade agreements has left the agriculture community wondering what the future holds, and this has not been helpful to producers of cereal grains and animal protein. While there is always discussion regarding the streamlining of the regulatory process, it is taking longer and costing more to register new products and technologies. The continued blending of some of the market channels and the increasing market growth in internet sales has impacted the sleep patterns of some marketing and management managers during the year. As one manager recently told me in an interview, “we don’t care where the pet owner buys our products, we just want to make sure they buy them.”
