Viewpoint: Animal Health May Be Entering a More Active Innovation Cycle
Large animal-health companies are facing increasing competitive pressure and public-market expectations for profitable growth. One likely consequence is greater interest in acquiring, partnering with, or licensing innovative assets developed outside their own organizations.
That could be good news for smaller animal-health companies and the private investors backing them.
But there is a structural problem. Too many companies approach strategic buyers before they are ready. At the same time, animal health still has a relatively small pool of investors who understand how to evaluate early-stage sector risk, and limited structured capital to help promising companies reach the point where larger players can engage meaningfully. If acquisition activity increases and more investors begin to see credible exit outcomes, that could bring needed oxygen into the early-stage animal-health capital ecosystem.
The opportunity, however, comes with a requirement: smaller companies will need to become better prepared.
That means identifying the risks most likely to block the next financing or strategic decision, intentionally mitigating those risks, and ensuring that the capital being raised is tied to generating the evidence needed to reach the next value-inflection point. It also means arriving at diligence with a clearer development story, not simply a promising technology and a large market.
In our view, a healthier innovation ecosystem will require both sides to evolve: more informed capital entering animal health, and early-stage companies becoming more disciplined in how they prepare for it.

Last week we asked how burnout among veterinarians compared to non-veterinarians in the US college-educated adult population. According to the 2023 Merck Animal Health Veterinary Wellbeing Study, on average veterinarians have about the same level of burnout as non-veterinarians. Surprisingly, 9% of our respondents got the answer correct, while 45% said that burnout was much higher and another 45% said it was somewhat higher than non-veterinarians. Interesting that none of the respondents thought that burnout was lower.
